Plas Newydd Burial Chamber
Plas Newydd Burial Chamber submitted by angela : Plas Newydd If you are visiting Bryn Celli Ddu on Anglesey it is worth looking at this Burial Chamber site as it is nearby at SH 520 697. The Plas Newydd Burial Chamber is close to Bryn Celli Ddu, but not usually open to the public.

Coming from the bridge on the A4080 after about 2 miles there is a left turn a few metres before the left turn to the National Trust car park for Plas Newydd. This lane has a blue private sign and leads to an education centre. We do not advise accessing the site without permission from the National Trust, whose land it is on. Once this is obtained, the tomb is on the right down that lane in a field.

This chambered tomb is recorded as Coflein NPRN 93829, which tells us this monument stands beside a cricket pitch. "Both chambers have their capstones, one a vast slab some 11.5m by 9.5m and 3.5m thick. No trace remains of the mound or cairn". The Coflein record includes a number of photographs and aerial photographs.

The Journal of Antiquities also includes an entry for Plas Newydd Burial Chamber, Llanfair P.G., Anglesey, which includes drawings of the cromlech, directions for finding the site, a description and a list of reference sources for more information.

Note: A rare chance to visit Plas Newydd Burial Chamber, Anglesey, free tour and talks on 16th-19th July 2019 - more details in the comments on our page

Plas Newydd Field System
From Coflein:
"Extensive, denuded earthworks of angular terraced field system, extending to the south and east of the prehistoric enclosure at Plas Newydd (NPRN 303248). It is reasonable to assume that the two sites are related. Discovered during RCAHMW aerial reconnaissance on 9th February 2006."

"These two tombs are the only two in the whole of Britain outside Ireland to share the remarkable Newgrange style ornamentation.". Not quite true. See also The Calderstones in Liverpool, of all places!

Bryn Celli Ddu Burial Chamber by Anonymous on Monday, 13 March 2006
Condition:Beautifully maitained with lovely information boards
Ambience:Really atmospheric (would be amazing in cold misty weather)
Access:Excellent in dry weather but on my visit in late Febuary part of the path was under water due to heavy rain. The water was not deep but annoying depending on your choice of footwear.

What would have been nice was a information board explaining the tombs significance along with Barclodiad Y Gawres a few miles further on in Anglesea. These two tombs are the only two in the whole of Britain outside Ireland to share the remarkable Newgrange style ornamentation. To most casual visitors this will mean nothing but to those who have visited other chambers mainly in Wiltshire to be told of this is very important, it would bring their significance to life.

Come on CADW ,your new information boards are lovely but spend a bit more on a just one more to explain those carvings.
