Long Barrow in Denbighshire

Details of Site:
A Neolithic burial mound in the Dee valley near Cynwyd, mid-Wales, never excavated and so dating uncertain. Recent surveys identify the long, denuded mound as a Neolithic chambered tomb (long barrow) rather than the Bronze Age round barrow it has sometimes been classed as. The form, scale, and association with the river suggest a primarily Neolithic origin.

A possible Neolithic ceremonial cursus monument has been identified across the Dee from Gwerclas at SJ06204343 (the Corwen Cursus - see our site page Site ID 25380). The pairing of long barrow and cursus along this stretch of the Dee, at a historic river crossing point, suggests one element of a wider ritual landscape running along this mountain river route.

Long barrows in Wales are relatively uncommon compared to the concentrations in Wessex and the Cotswolds, making each example significant. The Dee valley location connects Gwerclas to a chain of Neolithic monuments along this major river system, which served as a natural route through the Welsh mountains.

Location of finds:
To date, the site remains unexcavated, so no finds to report/display.
