TipsyTwitcher visited on 26th Sep 2025 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 I visited today and found the barrows are still in good condition. Access is a bit tricky, the three barrows south of Crow Lane are overgrown, but still definable. The third barrow is the other side of a track and has tree cover. The fourth is north of Crow Lane, to the right of a track that goes along the edge of Fingers Post Plantation, and is the best defined of the four.

There is an alignment of a number of these barrows/tumps/tumuli,which seems to mirror or map Ursa Major, the constellation of The Plough.I first noticed this whilst poring over an OS map in the late seventies-It is also worth noting that the aforementioned alignment also aligns with a farm adjacent to Houghton Estate named North Star or Pole Star Farm(I forget which precisely).A few years later I found my idea confirmed by Paul Devereaux in his Ley Hunters Companion.Upon attempting to reconstruct that original alignment I have found that the combined assets of the latest OS maps,Google Earth,Google Maps etc.far from providing an unambiguous reiteration thereof have rather yielded a plethora of acknowledged and very plausible barrows, tumuli, tumps, earthworks, springs etc. and such profusion occasions confusion and obfuscation.
What the sites and markers of this region lack in their modest and simple construction they more than compensate for in their abundance.
From a point South,South-East of,say,Litcham, expanding in a radial arc outward and Northward encompassing Weasenham,Massingham,Harpley,The Rudhams,Harpley Dams,Houghton,Anmer,Bircham not to mention the Acres,Castle,South and West with their wealth of medieval.saxon and ,by default,pre-existing sites of singular significance-there are dozens, maybe scores of ancient and valid markers to consider. As to some overweaning purpose or pattern to it all ?Consider the quantum universe-not as a coherent, symmetrical, predictable network of particles, connections and reciprocity but as a constantly fluctuating series of fields acrosss which countless tiny flashes, explosions, exchanges and ejections of energies are occurring ..by such chaos all that we are is defined.
