This is the other timber circle still on Home beach, not the original Seahenge which is in Lynn Museum. This one is being gradually washed away. It could be what remains of a burial mound and has been radiocarbon dated to 2049BC, the time of Seahenge, There are also various other Bronze Age features to be found on the beach, see the other photos for more. Top photo by Tom Charlton @TomCharlton25 on Twitter, used with permission.

We first published images in 2004, and it was seen again in June 2013 minus the two central logs. Latest images from 2023.

Holme II submitted by cat_murphy : You can just about make out a few of the timber posts, but they are well-eroded now. Physically, it reminds me a little of the salt marsh it started out as, although you can tell it is now part of the beach. (3 comments)

Holme II submitted by cat_murphy : This almost looks like something from a futuristic sci-fi film, but you can make out something that looks like a hole. Nothing else. It was a very hot day and the tide was out.

Holme II submitted by Andy B : Evidence of the recent damage to this site. This photo was taken in March 2004. You will note that one of the 2 central logs had been washed away whilst the other had been dislodged. This is the way the original Seahenge would have gone had it been left in situ.

Timber Monuments and Coastal Processes: Archaeological Remains at Holme Beach by Andy B on Tuesday, 19 July 2016

Timber Monuments and Coastal Processes: Recording and Monitoring of Archaeological Remains at Holme Beach, Norfolk, UK 2003–2008 by David Robertson & John Ames

PDF, Free access
DOI:10.1080/14732971.2015.1112594

Between 2003 and 2008 an archaeological walkover and monitoring survey recorded forty-one archaeological features on Holme Beach, including an Early Bronze Age timber circle, at least one Bronze Age trackway and Anglo-Saxon fishweirs. Coastal processes were seen to affect the features in a range of ways, including initial exposure, greater exposure over time, scouring, loss of timbers, retreat of peat beds and dune faces and concealment by sand. Regular, intensive and detailed monitoring ensured the variable and somewhat unpredictable nature of coastal processes was recorded, with variations identified over time and by location.

Second timber circle on Holme beach radiocarbon dated to 2049BC, the time of Seahenge by Andy B on Wednesday, 02 July 2014
(User Info | Send a Message)
Archaeologists are about to go public with the results of tests which have dated a wooden structure found at Holme, near Hunstanton, to 2049BC.

The revelation is certain to spark fresh debate about why ancient people built the mysterious oak circles, during the early Bronze Age.

“The felling date on them is the spring or early summer of 2049BC, those trees were felled at exactly the same time,” said David Robertson, historic environment officer with Norfolk County Council.

“Having one was fantastic, having two adds to the story. We have to try and understand not just why they were built but what were they used for.”

This is odd because we published a news item in August 2004 saying "Archaeologists have finally gone on record and confirmed that a second timber circle found within yards of Seahenge was even older. Carbon dating shows it dates back to 2400BC – more than three centuries before Bronze Age people overturned a giant tree stump and surrounded it with a ring of oak posts, for reasons we have yet to fathom."

But that one was apparently 'within yards' whereas this Holme 2 is 4km away, a location given by our local contact bec-zog. Is this a third circle or is our location wrong?

This is the remains of a wooden dolmen type structure within a circle?

That sort of thing - but more ceremonial than burial I'd have thought. Holme I (Seahenge) had an upended tree stump in the centre - see the nearby sites list

Are there any specific names for either of these circles at Holme. Is there any evidence of them being called Scotteninge or Hengestamord.

Hello, no, not as far as we know, and given these photos are 5 years old we don't know if these sites are still intact.

airmyun adds: A set of sailing directions from 1190 AD refers to:
Then in the land of St Edmund is a port suitable for large ships that is called Scotteninge.
It lies between King’s Lynn and Blakeney.
