Castle Ring (Stiperstones)
Castle Ring (Stiperstones) submitted by w650marion : Centre picture - "The strong cross-ridge rampart 8m wide and 3.5m high with an outer ditch on the south side 5m wide and 1.2m deep set across the narrow neck of the spur. The rampart is interrupted approximately midway along its length by a slightly offset, inturned entrance 6m wide." (Vote or comment on this photo)
A large univallate hillfort in Shropshire in a naturally strong defensive position on a steep sided spur at the north end of the Stiperstones ridge. Access is only along the ridge/spur. Most walkers on the Stiperstones route never visit Castle Ring, which is a shame as its situation is quite dramatic, with views across to many other hillforts in the area.

(Earl's Hill, Middletown Hill, Beacon Ring, Roundton Fort, another Castle Ring, and counting....) The enclosed area of the hillfort is roughly triangular in plan with maximum internal dimensions of 280m NNE to SSW by 190m, sloping down to the north.

The artificial defences are designed to enhance the natural strength of the site. The natural hillslopes fall precipitously on all sides except the south where there is a flattened ridge/saddle, the only access. The earthworks across the ridge are clear, including a strong cross-ridge rampart 8m wide and 3.5m high with an outer ditch on the south side 5m wide and 1.2m deep. The entrance through this rampart is midway along its length, offset and inturned.

Three Castle Rings in this area, so this is the correct listing for this one as searching Historic England can be confusing -
