The plateau is inhabited by humans since the Neolithic. It is not known when the first hillfort was built. It has been suggested, that it was constructed by the Bructeri in the 1st or 2nd century. The majority of the ramparts present today stems from the Saxons. They defeated the Bructeri ca. 700 CE and strengthened the fortification of the Syburg.
The enclosure consists of two parts, that were fortified with ramparts and ditches. The ramparts had a palisade and later a dry stone wall. The Donarbrunnen (“Donar Well“), today`s Petersbrunnen, ensured the supply with water. The site of the well was most likely also used as sanctuary.
The hillfort was taken by the Frankish king Karl der Große (Charles the Great, Charlemagne) in 775. The Franks reused the hillfort after some rearrangements. In order to replace the pagan sanctuary, they built the church St. Peter zu Syberg, which is still present today. Furthermore, they rededicated the well and called it Petersbrunnen. The church exhibits one of the oldest ancient cross stones in Westphalia (Syburg Cross Stone).
In medieval times, the Hohensyburg castle was built within the inner part of the former hillfort enclosure. In 1902 the monumental Kaiser Wilhelm memorial and a look-out tower (Vinketurm) were built near the ruins of the medieval castle.
Most of the ramparts and ditches of the hillfort are still present today. The Petersbrunnen well and the Syberg Cross Stone can also be visited. Some of the archaeologic finds as well as a model of the hillfort can be seen in the Ruhrtalmuseum in Schwerte.
