The well is located on the area of the Hohensyburg hillfort in Dortmund (North Rhine-Westphalia/Germany). It was rediscovered during excavations and reconstructed in 1983-1985. The water was analysed in recent years and found to be very healthy based on its chemical composition. It is most likely the same type of water that comes from the nearby Petersbrunnen.

The well was part of the Medieval Oberhof, which was also called Königshof. It was located near a vehmic court site.
The age of the site is unknown. It could have possibly already have been used as Germanic thing site, as discussed for the still existing court Femeiche in Raesfeld.

The stone table of the court site was destroyed together with the remains of the Oberhof buildings in 1955. Today, the reconstructed well house is the only visible part of the site.
