Another example of coexisting carved stones and Christian chapels in the Alps, with the overlapping of different cultures and beliefs.
This is in Val Fabiolo, a wild narrow valley in Sondrio Province. The well trodden path runs between Sirta, a hamlet near Morbegno, and the more touristy Campo Tartano.
What I find interesting here is the potential interpretation of the territory.
The stone presents three cup marks on the top and South facing side (possibly making the most of what little sunshine reaches the heart of the valley?); the carvings are clearly visible when descending the path.
The chapel that was built next to the carved stone is instead designed to welcome the tired walkers climbing up towards their homes in the higher pastures, to invite them to pause and pray I suppose, and so it happens to be North facing.
All sides covered... and just as well: this valley is full of mystery and frightening legends, so beware of who you could meet along the way......
