Piotrekszw visited on 28th Mar 2020 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 The site has been cleared off the ivy and other plants. It's in a good overall shape, although the chamber has collapsed long time ago. You can easily spot the place by the high geodetic marker and signs from the trail. It's worth visit, especially because it is surrounded with rocky hills and beautiful mysterious forests. I am sure there are much more megalithic sites and wonderful rock formations hidden in the area.

Identified and excavated in 1878 by C. Ribeiro, the "Tholos do Monge" lies alone atop one of the highest elevations of the Sierra de Sintra. Is a mass grave built in the Chalcolithic period (2300 BC / 2000 BC) in a time that the defensive systems of some villages were reinforced and fortified at Extremadura ridge. It was subsequently reused in the Late Bronze Age (1800/800 BC).
The grave is oriented north and was built taking advantage of a natural depression in the granite. The site consists of a subcircular chamber with about fifteen feet in maximum diameter and erected walls with slabs of different sizes placed horizontally with about two feet tall, covered in fake dome skylight type. Today remains almost exclusively the structuring elements of the burial chamber. The site originally had exterior corridor and lobby.
The excavation of this Tholos revealed common Chalcolithic ceramic and sílexes currently exhibited in the Museum of the Geological Survey of Portugal.
