The Waikoloa Petroglyph Preserve is situated just north of the border between the ancient Hawaiian kingdoms of Lālāmilo and Waikoloa. Most of its petroglyphs date to a time before contact with the Western world (basically the arrival of Captain Cook in 1778), but on the edges of the field there are also petroglyphs clearly younger and showing horses, sailing ships, muskets, and Roman letters.
The smooth pāhoehoe lava rock provides the canvas for the thousands of carvings. Although 80 % of the carvings are cup- and ringmarks, 12 % represent human figures and the rest miscellaneous representations like animals, canoes and so forth.
The most prominent motif of this petroglyph area seems to be birth and fertility. Many cupmarks were used for the piko ceremony, where the umbilical cord of a newborn baby was wrapped in tapa cloth, placed in a cupmark , and covered with a stone. If the next day the remnant was missing it was considered a bad omen because it was thought to have been taken by a rat. Rats are considered thieves by Hawaiians and the child would thus absorb the negative traits of a thief.
