Twmpa cairn  Cairn  Wales  Powys  Visited  31st Aug 2026  1  5  2  A blowy and blustery bank holiday Monday trip to the Black Mountains, we head up the Gospel Pass to park, then walk southwest along the top to Lord Hereford's Knob (Twmpa) and on to Rhos Dirion for a sit down and lunch. At the top of Lord Hereford's Knob used to be a walkers cairn, but this has now been flattened, leaving a sort of circular base of stones, in which at one point I am sure is the remains of a cist, with two side set stones creating...

Llanddowror Standing stone  Standing Stone (Menhir)  Wales  Carmarthenshire (Sir Caerfyrddin)  Visited  5th Sep 2026  3  3  4  Travelling to Tenby and notice a standing stone marked just off the A477, so go have a look. The A477 has been rebuilt and almost passes over the top of this stone, so park in the village and walk along the track under the new road and there it is in the field ahead. Is that really it? looks way too small compared to the pictures I have seen. Yep, it is. Now I guess the art is to get pictures which make it look bigger!  226  55
Cross Stones, Llanddowror  Early Christian Sculptured Stone  Wales  Carmarthenshire (Sir Caerfyrddin)  Visited  5th Sep 2026  2  3  4  On the way back to the car, I notice "Cross Stones" marked on the map, so go look for them in the playing field beyond the churchyard. What looks like two stubs of once larger stones, a cross carving can be seen on the larger of the two stones, but difficult to see anything on the smaller stone in the shade.   226  56
Mowingword Promontory Enclosure  Promontory Fort / Cliff Castle  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Visited  6th Sep 2026  1  4  3  Park at Bosherston, then walk alongside the lily ponds to Broadhaven beach, then up onto the cliffs and around to the east to Stackpole Head, passing some tremendous geology, with sea stacks, steep sided coves, arches, caves and round holes. I later notice on the Portal that the thumb of land sticking out from Stackpole Head, Mowingword Promontory, is included as a promontary fort. Has to be said that I saw no evidence of any fortifications, but ...

Devil's Quoit (Stackpole)  Standing Stone (Menhir)  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Visited  6th Sep 2026  4  4  3  Circular walk from Bosherston to Broadhaven beach beside the lily ponds, then around the cliffs to Stackpole Head and Barrafundle beach. I then head westwards up through the dunes and woodland of Stackpole Warren to find the cross track which takes me to the Devil's Quoit. A nice stone in the afternoon sun, which has eluded me before. I head back over the eight arch stone bridge and around the lily ponds to Bosherston, for a well earned pint at t...

St Govan's Well  Holy Well or Sacred Spring  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Visited  6th Sep 2026  3  5  4  Drive out to the car park at St Govan's for a quick look at the chapel and cliffs. Quite a few people there, and it seems like the steps down to the chapel have been made easier than I remember.   226  60
Harold Stone (Bosherton)  Standing Stone (Menhir)  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Saw from a distance  6th Sep 2026        Time to get back to base, but not before a quick stop to see if I can see the Harold stone in the fields to the east of the road. Yes, but too far for a decent pic on my phone  226  61
Devil's Quoit (St Twynnells)  Standing Stone (Menhir)  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Saw from a distance  6th Sep 2026        Time to get back to base, but not before a quick stop to see if I can see the Devil's Quoit in the fields to the west of the road. Yes, but too far for a decent pic on my phone  226  62
Garn Wen 1  Chambered Tomb  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Visited  7th Sep 2026  4  3  4  Drive to Goodwick then up the hill on the road directly opposite the main road in, which bears round to the right. Follow this road up and there is then a sign pointing left to the burial chambers and a parking area behind the row of houses, with a footpath through behind the gardens. The first chamber (I presume is No 1) is the largest of the four, with a large capstone known as Carreg Samson. There is a little sign with some sort of generic "bu...

Garn Wen 2  Chambered Tomb  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Visited  7th Sep 2026  3  3  4  Moving north along the path, and soon get to the second chamber, basically a large slab capstone resting on several small supporting stones.   226  65
Garn Wen 3  Chambered Tomb  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Visited  7th Sep 2026  3  3  4  Just a bit further north, and chamber 3 is found. It is either one slab capstone on another large slab and some small supports, or two capstones, now one sat on the other. Many other stones are in the vicinity.   226  66
Garn Wen 4  Chambered Tomb  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Visited  7th Sep 2026  2  3  4  A bit further to the north from 3 and another slab can be found laying in the undergrowth. Not as big or prominent as the other three, this is possibly the remains of a fourth burial chamber. Overall it has been good to find these stones, but their situation leaves a bit to be desired, and at least I can now give them accurate grid references!  226  67
Parc-y-Cromlech  Chambered Tomb  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Visited  7th Sep 2026  3  4  3  A quick look at whats on the portal before leaving, and see that I can easily walk up the hill to find Parc-y-Cromlech, although unsure whether I will be able to visit, see over the hedges or be completely frustrated. Part way up the hill is an information board, with details of Denys Corbett Wilson, who made the first flight from here to Ireland in 1912 taking off from the field beyond. Once at the top, there is a large farmhouse with B&B, and l...

Ffyst Samson  Chambered Tomb  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Visited  7th Sep 2026  3  4  3  I drive southwest from Goodwick before turning right towards St Nicholas, parking near the farm at the bottom of the footpath which leads up to Ffyst Samson. Initially the path is over open fields, but the last few hundred metres are in scrubland with ferns, gorse and brambles making it quite difficult to get there without getting all scratched up. Once over the big steps style, then the Ffyst Samson dolmen can be seen in clear ground, it's capst...

Llanrhian Standing Stones  Standing Stones  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Saw from a distance  7th Sep 2026  3  3  4  After leaving Porthgain to drive back to Tenby, I quickly glance a stone standing in the field to the left of the road, near to the busy and mucky farm at the Llanrhian junction. Having passed before I realise it, I do not stop to have a better look.   226  70
The Hanging Stone (Pembrokeshire)  Chambered Tomb  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Visited  7th Sep 2026  4  3  4  I decide I can visit the Hanging Stone on my way back from Porthgain to Tenby, then use the Cleddau Bridge to get back, so set my satnav for Sardis. Once nearby, there is room to park at the edge of the road before walking down what looks like a private driveway to the stones. Upon approach there is a very nice moment when the stones reveal themselves to you along the trackway in front. The main thing is a large capstone sitting on three support ...

Ring-Stone, Martin's Haven  Early Christian Sculptured Stone  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Visited  8th Sep 2026  4  3  4  Drive out to the point of Marloes headland for a walk around the Martins Haven nature reserve headland for a look over to Skomer island. The sun is out with beautiful light but its very windy. Start off down to Martin's Haven, passing the info centre with a little niche in the wall at the side of the road where this nicely carved stone is presented. Down at the haven there is a boat is leaving for Skomer, and there are signs on the beach warning ...

Martin's Haven fort  Promontory Fort / Cliff Castle  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Visited  8th Sep 2026  3  4  4  Drive out to the point of Marloes headland for a walk around the Martins Haven nature reserve headland for a look over to Skomer island. The sun is out with beautiful light but its very windy. Onto the headland passing over and through some large defensive ramparts and a sign stating that the whole headland was once a defended settlement and fort. Around this headland is a cracking walk, the cliffs and coves below inspiring while the views over t...

Martin's Haven Headland Cairn  Cairn  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Visited  8th Sep 2026  3  5  3  I had noticed that the information map had a dolmen like symbol on it near to the centre of the headland, and when I was on the way back along the southern coast, I couldn't miss a large rock standing in the open land, so I went for a look. To me it looked like the large stone had been stood up on its edge, with a circle of stones made around it rather like a large cairn with central structure. Some of this might be natural, but the whole thing j...

Dale Fort  Hillfort  Wales  Pembrokeshire  Visited  8th Sep 2026  3  4  4  Drive to Dale for lunch at the Griffin, then decide to walk out to Dale Point, but it’s a disappointing walk along road all the way, with very little in the way of views through the woodland. Once at the head, its all a private field studies place now, but can get up onto the old iron age fortifications from the coast path which does give some views over Milford Haven to Angle.   226  76
