Pool Farm Cist
Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Rock Art
Country: England (Somerset)
Visited: Yes on 23rd Jun 2011
Pool Farm Cist submitted by TheCaptain on 23rd Jun 2011. I was walking through the field with the public footpath through it, when I heard a commotion and looked around to see about 50 bullocks running over to me, snorting and grunting as they ran.
Rather quickly, I legged it to the nearest gate, and fairly quickly vaulted it (remarkably so for a 50 year old with a still damaged shoulder)!
I guess they were only curious, but as I walked along the adjoining field they kept following me, and would not go away. Trip to Pool Farm Cist abandoned...

Treburrick menhir
Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 6th Dec 2014

Treburrick menhir submitted by theCaptain on 6th Dec 2014. On returning from the stone, there was a lovely old chap sat on the farm wall, wanting a chat. He told us that there used to be 5 stones standing around here. Of the other four, he said:
"One (upstream from the remaining stone) was pulled up by the new man in the farm over there when he moved in a few years back, don't know what he did that for, they do no harm, and I think they should be left where they be, its not for us to mess with these old things".
"One of them fell over, it was too b...

Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: England (Somerset)
Visited: Yes on 29th Jun 2011
Barrow House Farm Long Barrow submitted by TheCaptain on 29th Jun 2011. Just to the west of the A39, on the top of the hill just before it descends southwards into Chewton Mendip, there are some lumps and bumps which can be seen in the field.
It looks to be two or three round barrows with a fairly large long barrow in between them.

Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 6th Dec 2014

Gwallon Longstone submitted by theCaptain on 6th Dec 2014. It was easy enough to walk along the public footpath surrounding the college grounds on the south side and see the stone from there, but not so simple to get a decent view because of the high fences.

Lime House Long Barrow submitted by TheCaptain on 29th Jun 2011. Just to the southwest of central Chewton Mendip, up onto the higher meadows, there is a large and overgrown lumpy and bumpy area, which was once a fairly large long barrow.

Priddy Circles Unfinished N submitted by TheCaptain on 4th Jul 2011. The eastern arc of the fourth Priddy Circle, seen over the top of the hedge from the roadside, June 2011.
The fence helps to give a good idea off the size of the remaining bank and external ditch.

Tintagel Cliff Castle submitted by theCaptain on 21st Dec 2014. Enjoying a pleasure flight in an old DH89 Rapide biplane, the spectacular Tintagel Head and castle was clearly visible from my side of the aeroplane as we did a 270 degree turn above it.

Whitestone (Lee)
Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 4th Jan 2015

Whitestone (Lee) submitted by theCaptain on 4th Jan 2015. I found a place to park and got out for a look, and there was the large white quartz stone, stood in the paddock just above the roadside.
It's probably about 8 to 10 feet tall, and cannot be seen from the nearby roadside due to the thick hedge, but it can be seen (in winter anyway) from further up the hillside

Closer inspection reveals this to be a memorial to the American soldiers of the second World War who were based in this area in the build up to D-Day, using the beaches of Woolacombe and nearby Saunton to practise their invasion techniques.

Showery Tor Northwest Cairn 1 submitted by theCaptain on 11th Jan 2015. On the slopes of Showery Tor, above the top end of the long cairn structure, are remains of a few hut and round cairn structures.
I thought this to be the remains of a round cairn with cist.

Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 11th Jan 2015

Roughtor north submitted by theCaptain on 11th Jan 2015. My memory tells me that there are many round houses and enclosed farmsteads on the northern slopes of roughtor, many in a fine state of conservation, but until we were almost right down at the bottom there was little other than very damaged sites to be seen.
However, down low beside the river and many enclosed farmsteads with their round houses built into the walls can be seen.
I do believe I must have been spoiled by some of the much better preserved hut circles and farmsteads I hav...

Ste-Mère-Eglise Borne Gallo/Roman submitted by TheCaptain on 28th Jul 2011. In the main square around the outside of the church (with D-Day parachutist hanging from the tower) can be seen this tall stone column.
A small sign states that it is a Borne Gallo/Romaine, a marker stone of some kind.

Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: Austria
Visited: Yes on 20th Feb 2015

Sölden menhir submitted by theCaptain on 20th Feb 2015. Within central Sölden, there is a large stone of 3 to 4 metres height just standing there.
I have no idea as to whether this is an ancient menhir, but what else would it be doing here?

Stoanerhof stones
Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Standing Stones
Country: Austria
Visited: Yes on 20th Feb 2015

Stoanerhof stones submitted by theCaptain on 20th Feb 2015. To the southern side of the town of Mayrhofen, in the locality of Stoanerhof, a couple of large stones can be seen standing at the sides of various lanes between the farms and chalets. I only have pics of this one.
I have no idea whether they are ancient menhirs, but they don't look natural to me, and look to have been stood in their positions deliberately.
