Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 2nd Nov 2006

Lanyon Quoit submitted by thecaptain on 2nd Nov 2006. My effort a few years ago on a misty murky day to get the Ding Dong Minehouse inside Lanyon Quoit.
I was quite disappointed with the results, and not only because of the murky day. I of course should have done some gardening before laying on the damp ground to remove the foreground grass. A wide angle shot of the quoit would have looked much more like I was wanting, but to get the engine house bigger, a telephoto shot was required. Or of course some jiggery pokery, as I suspect was done in t...

Bradenham Puddingstone submitted by thecaptain on 20th Oct 2006. The village green at Bradenham is surrounded by lumps of the local puddingstone, a geological oddity related to sarsen, and of which lumps were thought to have been used as prehistoric trackway markers.

Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: France (Normandie:Calvados (14))
Visited: Yes on 28th Sep 2006. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 4
Menhir de la Demoiselle de Bracqueville submitted by thecaptain on 11th Oct 2006. To visit this stone, find your way from Beny-sur-Mer to the south along small tracks to Bracqueville farm. Park near to the farm, and walk about 500 metres along the track which passes in front of the farm till you get to a junction of trackways. Take the grassy track to the left, and the menhir is a further 500 metres along and just into the field on the left.

Log Text: Found this at last, on probably my third attempt. Find your way from Beny-sur-Mer to the south along small tracks to Bracqueville farm. Take the grassy track to the left, and the menhir is a further 500 metres along and just into the field on the left.
Its about 1.4 metres tall, 0.7 metres wide and 0.3 metres thick, and leaning towards the north. The farmer has left very little room around it, and it has some very recent scrapes and damage done to it, no doubt from farm machinery. It is likely that this menhir often gets obscured by crops in the summer. Nice to have found it, its a nice stone. Stupidly I forgot to take my gps with me to get a proper position.

Menhir dit Pierre Debout (Reviers) submitted by thecaptain on 29th Dec 2005. Reviers menhir.
Just inland from the D-Day beaches can be found (when the crops are down) the sad remains of this menhir.

Log Text: As I am right here and passing by, thought I may as well stop and take a look in the daylight. The crops in the field are growing, or more likely its been left fallow, but the ploughs have been right up to the stone and its fairly difficult to spot, even with this small growth. The poor stone is in a very sorry state, and could do with some TLC. Shame its so woefully looked after, so close to the well maintained large barrow.

Madacombe submitted by thecaptain on 27th Sep 2006. Madacombe stone row, Exmoor. Its in there somewhere.
Could I find anything ? No chance !!!! I found nothing at all, wading around in waist deep wet grass and heather. If there are any stones to be found here, they are well hidden under the wet moorland growth. I did however, get soaking wet and a twisted ankle for my efforts !

The earthworks can clearly be seen in the field, but without proper access to the field, it was difficult to fully determine what is there.

Upper Erme Row
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 23rd Aug 2006
Upper Erme Row submitted by thecaptain on 23rd Aug 2006. At the southern end, the row starts at the 16 metre diameter Kiss-in-the-Ring stone circle.
From here the row runs northwards, with the stones generally about half a metre tall above the modern turf, and spaced at intervals of about 1.5 to 2 metres. The grass around these stones is in July very long, and many of the stones are very difficult to see, but the path of the row is clearly seen by the darker shade of the grass surrounding them, and also for the path which runs alongside.
