Halicarnassus Mausoleum submitted by thecaptain on 28th Mar 2007. The modern day remains of Halicarnassus Mausoleum in Bodrum Turkey.

Log Text: The wind has got up overnight and is apparently too strong out at sea for us to go out for the day. This is only the third day that’s been cancelled all season. Still, it’s no problem, as we can go to Bodrum for the day and do the tourist thing. I never knew before that Bodrum was the ancient city of Halicarnassos, and home to one of the seven ancient wonders. What an amazing history the place has. The Dolmus takes about 20 minutes and costs about 30p each. Brilliant.
First off, we head for the remains of the Halicarnassos Mausoleum, the ancient wonder of the world. It was built by Queen Artemesia for her brother and husband, King Mausolus in 355BC.
What an amazing place it must have been, about 7 storeys high. But when the Knights of St John got there in 1494, they decided it was nothing more than a fantastic pile of stone with which to build their castle. So now there’s almost nothing left.
There is remains of an amazing drainage system and robber tunnels where ancient people tried to get in for treasure, and a few bits of massive column, but not much else.

Log Text: My notes from my sailing log book of my visit.
The wind has got up overnight again, and is W 6-7 out in the main sea area, with 2m swell. We are going nowhere today. Catch the Dolmus to Bodrum to do the tourist thing, spend the morning visiting the Halicarnassus Mausoleum, and afternoon in the Bodrum Castle and shipwrecks museum. A good day to be stuck in harbour. The Dolmus takes about 20 minutes and costs about 30p each. Brilliant.
After lunch, its to the castle, which includes the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. This is all absolutely brilliant, with shipwrecks and their finds found round the local coast dating back to the bronze age. In various castle rooms are different shipwrecks, arranged as they were found, and as the ships would have been. I particularly liked the 12th Century BC wreck with its ingots of copper, and there is some amazing glass ware from the 11th century “Glass ship”. And masses and masses of amphorae from throughout the millenia.

America's Stonehenge submitted by thecaptain on 14th Dec 2003. One of the chambers at Mystery Hill, also known as America's Stonehenge, near Salem, New Hampshire. There are several of these chambers and other structures at the site as well as the calendar sighting stones
I have to say, despite their best efforts to assure me its 4000 years old, the stones just didnt look weathered enough to me.

Fox Tor stone setting submitted by TheCaptain on 31st Aug 2010. On the southeastern slopes of Fox Tor, above Redmoor Marsh, a stone setting is marked on the RCHM Bodmin Moor survey.
I am not sure what to make of this, a couple of large side set slabs about 1.5 metres tall, with perhaps many other smaller ones around them.

Les Roches-Hues submitted by thecaptain on 10th Nov 2009. When I eventually found my way to this, the top of a large stone could be seen in the distance over some impenetrable overgrowth.
Looking for a way through proved futile.

Quebec ice dolmen submitted by theCaptain on 22nd Dec 2009. Each year in February, the wonderful city of Québec holds a massive winter carnival, the Carnaval de Québec. Among the many events and festivities is an ice sculpture competition, with entries from around the whole world.
The year I visited, 1989, amongst all of the various ice carvngs and sculptures, there was a massive ice dolmen, made I believe by some Breton people. I could not of course, pass it by without taking a photograph.

Buttern W
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 31st Mar 2010
Buttern W submitted by theCaptain on 31st Mar 2010. Is there anything left to see today of the possible remains of Buttern Hill (W) circle?
I saw a couple of slightly erect stones a bit further to the north of the main circle, on the far side of the valley. So I went for a look.
I found a couple of edge set stones, spaced about the same as the main circle, with other fallen stones and buried stones which could be considered to be a part of a circle, at position SX 6486 8855.
But I was not convinced.
