Log Text: This is a nice tapered Iron Age stèle which can be found near the hamlet of Kerider, a few kilometres to the east of Plouescat. It is easy to find, just to the north of the D.10 road to St Pol-de-Léon near to the roundabout. It is about 2 metres tall, and nicely octagonal in section.

Ile Carn menhir

Ile Carn menhir submitted by theCaptain on 9th May 2014. I read somewhere that a menhir was reported on this island, but has become missing. So, before we went for a look at the cairn, I had a brief look all over the rest of the island, and just behind one of the ruined concrete look out positions is a large long stone laying flat to the ground and mostly now buried, which would have made a perfect menhir, probably just below 2 metres tall, fitting my memory of the description.

Barnenez cairn #2

Barnenez cairn #2

Barnenez cairn #2 submitted by theCaptain on 21st Apr 2014. The make-up of the ground at the raised area, which I take to be cairn 2.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Leaving the car in the main Barnenez car park, we walked the few hundred metres up to the top of the hill and then took the first trackway to the left (west) just before the first house. Between 50 and 100m along here, and a field to the south opens up from which gives views over the main Barnenez cairn site, with a few gaps in the hedges at the fence allowing decent views.

The northwestern side of this field is slightly raised, and all covered in impenetrable scrubland, which I assume is the remains of the cairn 2. Back to the top, and taking the path westwards into the next field, and a clear raised area is passed over, and looking at the ground, and along the edge of the ploughed field, the whole lot is made up of stones, mostly between 20 and 50 cm size, but some being much bigger. Perfect cairn material. A bit further round, and another splendid view of the main Barnenez cairn can be seen, side on from the northwestern side. Splendid.

Pointe de Guilligui allée couverte

Pointe de Guilligui allée couverte

Pointe de Guilligui allée couverte submitted by theCaptain on 21st Apr 2014. Pointe de Guilligui allée couverte seen in its hilltop position from across the bay, on the quay at Portsall.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This is an unusual allée couverte, not quite at the top of the Guilliguy headland, overlooking the ocean where the Amoco Cadiz was wrecked, and the little port of Portsall. This is a place which has been revered over the millennia, and still serves as a place for thought by the big cross, and the views are fantastic.

The allée couverte was built in the neolithic, but much altered during the bronze age. It is now an L shaped tomb, the main part being 6 metres long by 2 metres wide with a couple of capstones still in place. At the eastern end an extra chamber has been built onto the south side, about 4 metres in length and still with one capstone. There is a nicely carved entrance stone between the two. It looks to me like the main chamber has been shortened here when this extra chamber was made, and a couple of stones still survive to the east.

Menoignon menhir

Menoignon menhir submitted by theCaptain on 5th May 2014. Absolutely splendid menhir which is easily found near to a corner in a little open farmland lane, just behind a little scrubland area.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Absolutely splendid menhir which is easily found near to a corner in a little open farmland lane, just behind a little scrubland area. The menhir must be about 8 metres in height, of large girth at the bottom, slowly tapering up to a pointed top. The southeastern face of the menhir has been worked into an extremely flat surface, of triangular shape, something which clearly took a lot of time to produce. One can only speculate at what this was used for, I have no doubt that it may well have been painted on.

The locality of the stone is a bit marshy, and perhaps there is a spring nearby, underneath some of the wooded glades. Not far away to the east (~20 metres) is another large stone, which looks fairly natural, but I have no doubt it has some relation to the menhir.

Log Text: The remains of no less than three granite stèles are to be found lined up in the churchyard at Goulien. One is very small, one about 1.5 metres high and probably once used as a cross base. The third is 2.5 metres tall and has lovely grooves carved into it.

Log Text: This is a nice looking dolmen sitting in a pleasant field behind the houses. It is signposted from the roan, and has a path to it from behind the houses, where there is room to park. The chamber is about 3 metres long, less than 2 metres wide, and created with a good back stone and two large side slabs each side. There are other stones at the open end, perhaps an entry corridor or a broken front slab. The capstone is a nice piece of granite, and overhangs the sides considerably in places, being about 4 metres across in each direction.

Kerprigent alignement de menhirs

Kerprigent alignement de menhirs submitted by theCaptain on 11th Jul 2014. In the woodlands to the northeast of Kerprigent Manoir, can be seen a quartz standing stone, just short of three metres tall. Wander into this delightful ancient woodland, and it is soon seen that the quartz menhir is not alone, being surrounded by a large number of other quartz stones.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: After the disappointment of Barnenez being closed we still have quite a drive to the hotel in Ploumenach, so although no time for any out of the way stone visits, but should be able to fit a couple of quick visits in if not too far out of the way. A good look at the maps suggests a couple of places, the first of which seemed to be an old chapel despite its dolmen sign on the map, and this the second which looked easy enough to find, and indeed was.

In the grounds of Kerprigent Manoir, not far from the side of a small road through the woodlands to the northeast of the Manoir can be seen a quartz standing stone, just short of three metres tall. Find somewhere to park and wander into this delightful ancient woodland, and it is soon seen that the quartz menhir is not alone, being surrounded by a large number of other quartz stones. It initially looked as if these stones were in several lines, but to be honest they could be randomly positioned, and lines are always going to appear. The main menhir was probably once much larger, as it looked as if the many surrounding stones were probably broken from its top.

On this hot April afternoon, it was lovely to be in the calm and shade amongst these ancient trees, just about to spring into life, and with masses of birdsong all around. As is the normal case, these quartz stones seem to keep very cool. A lovely place to spend some time.

Menhir de Coat Mocoun (sud)

Menhir de Coat Mocoun (sud) submitted by TheCaptain on 26th Jul 2016. Spent some time looking for various menhirs here while travelling through the area. To the south of the road junction I followed a pathway through some newly cut scrubland which was until revently forest, heading towards the noise of the quarry. The path eventually entered into some wooded land, with many boulders laying around, the remnants of quarrying. Then I saw something. Not an 8m tall menhir, but a 4 metre tall stone standing amongst noulders. I am pretty convinved that this stone...

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This is a nice allée couverte which can be found in a field just to the right of the D.24 road as you head southwest out of Moelan-sur-Mer just at the limits of the village. The chamber is more than 15 metres in length, and has all seven capstones still in place, although a couple of them are broken. It is aligned on about 055°, but it is difficult to be precise because of the trees growing within it preventing me getting a good sightline for my compass. The stones consist of a nice pink granite, and is of the leaning side stone type construction. At the back end, the last section is blocked off with a crosswise slab.

Log Text: In a field to the left of the D116 road to the south of Moelan-sur-Mer on the way to Brigneau can be found this lovely allée couverte with an associated menhir just outside its entrance. The menhir is about 3 metres high, 2 metres wide and has been nicely shaped.

The allée couverte is about 9 metres in length and faces to the east on an alignment of 100°. There are three complete and one broken (at the back) capstones sitting on top of the inwards leaning side stones, which are much wider at the base than the capstone width. Unfortunately the back end is all broken and has a tree growing in it. The front end has a narrowed down entrance.

There is a "hooting Hubert" bouy somewhere out to sea, continually hooting away !

Kernédiec allée couverte

Kernédiec allée couverte submitted by richardhtc on 5th Sep 2006. Kernédiec allée couverte, Commune of Riec sur Belon, August 2006
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Kernédiec allée couverte is of the arc boutée type construction, and it is one of only eight of this type known. This is where one row of side stones leans up against the other and there are no capstones, rather than the more normal two rows of uprights and horizontal capstones. The chamber is about eight metres in length, and faces eastwards at 085°. The six stones on the northern side are set fairly vertically, while the seven on the southern side lean on to them.

This type of construction saves on stones, but makes a much smaller space inside the chamber. This monument is to be found in a little picnic area besides the road a few kilometres to the south of the village of Riec-sur-Belon, but its a fairly tortuous drive to get to it !
