A panoramic view of the Cockpit Stone Circle which according to Magicmap ‘includes a circular kerbed stone bank 2.8m -11.2m wide and up to 0.5m high which encloses an area approximately 27m in diameter. There are 27 (?) standing and recumbent stones set largely into the internal face of this bank, thereby creating the stone circle. Hird Wood submitted by stu on 16th Jul 2004. NY416059. Remains of a concentric circle. Picture shows the largest stone of the inner circle (2 lower ones not shown). And the 3 stones of the outer ring built into a field wall. There are other possible 'fallen' stones of the outer ring dotted around. Access is pretty straightforward, approximately 0.25miles down a bridleway (NY414 062) which passes through the circle.

Dunmallard

Dunmallard submitted by nicoladidsbury on 13th Jan 2006. Dunmallard hillfort sit at the end of Ullswater lake, guarding access to it, and to the mountain passes beyond. The people of this hillfort would effectively have control of the lake and the valley. Moor Divock cairns and Cockpit stone circle lie on the moorside to the south.

Log Text: You can park free in the old school yard next to the bridge over the Tees, and follow the Pennine Way until you choose to divert towards the site. I know this because a helpful woman in the community bookshop told me (but she did say it's a Saxon burial site). The tourist info office is open only a few hours a week. Both places are staffed by volunteers.

Beeston Castle submitted by vicky on 7th Jun 2002. The entrance to Beeston Castle in Cheshire where a 13th Century Castle was built on top of an Iron Age hillfort (GR: SJ538592 ). Excavations in 1978 revealed that the Medieval wall of this outer gateway was constructed on top of a prehistoric rampart with external ditch and counterscarp bank. Prehistoric artefacts including bronze axes and implements, clay moulds and crucibles for casting bronze and a large amount of prehistoric pottery have been on the site of this 4 hectare hillfort.
