Pierre Plantée (Lèque)
Date Added: 19th May 2024
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: France (Languedoc:Gard (30))
Visited: Would like to visit
Pierre Plantée (Lèque) submitted by ocdolmen on 7th Aug 2006. La Pierre Plantée de Lussan (la Peyro Plantado) is the tallest menhir in Gard "département" with 5.60 metres.
This standing-stone is also called "la Lèque" (in occitan "la Leca"). The occitan language has kept old celt words in its vocabulary as "leca" (ie "the stone") which comes from gaulish "lech" (as in "cromlech")

Pierres Droites (Monteneuf) submitted by TheCaptain on 19th Jun 2007. The true extent of these stones was only discovered in the last 20 years or so after a forest fire, yet this set of aligned menhirs is probably one of the most important in France.

Piketon Mounds submitted by aluta on 29th Aug 2010. A view of the large mound, surmounted by a modern standing stone, otherwise known as a grave marker. No doubt it was thought to be an honour among later European-descended arrivals to be buried on the highest of the Indian mounds.

The more inland is the most complete, with one capstone surviving on the entry couloir. The chamber would probably have been roofed with large corbelled capstones around it, many of which survive fallen neaby.

Proleek Dolmen submitted by Sunny100 on 1st Sep 2010. The Proleek dolmen or burial chamber near Ballymacscanlan dates from the Neolithic period - some 5,000 years ago. The huge capstone measures approx 3.8 x 3.2 metres and is said to weigh somewhere between 30-40 tonnes. It is supported on only two up-rights each about 2.3 metres high.
