Glassonby

Glassonby submitted by nicoladidsbury on 13th Mar 2005. Glassonby Cairn Circle. Beautiful, peaceful, teaming with wildlife, remote and serene. Until a great big 4x4 came across the field and informed me the land was private and that I should have asked for permission. The ambience was gone in an instant, Katie was quite shaken. Please take my advice and try to get permission to visit. Then at least you can relax and enjoy the site to the full.

Gosforth Cross

Gosforth Cross submitted by nicoladidsbury on 30th Aug 2006. Gosforth Norse Cross Driving northwards towards Gosforth I saw a magnificent rainbow in the east, lighting up the fells with wonderful colour. I prayed, please last until I get to Gosforth! I parked, jumped out of the car, ran across the graveyard (trying not to be disrespectful) and managed to get two shots of the fading rainbow. 60 seconds later I would have been too late!

Log Text: Escaping from the horrendous weather during a weekend in Wasdale, we took shelter in the Church and played with side lighting to perfect the pictures of the Hogbacks and the Fisher Stone. This is such a marvellous place, so full of ancient Viking carvings. It never fails to stir me, to make me think about the ancestors of Cumbria.
One stone is called the Warrior Stone, and shows two Viking armies on one side, and the serpents on the other. The ends are possibly bears, and the roof may depict shingles. the other hogback is the Saints Stone, this one has a image of Jesus on the cross at the ends, and some fantstic carvings on the sides. The style is very reminisent of the Cross at Adlington, Penrith and Dacre.

Hazel Moor Enclosure

Hazel Moor Enclosure submitted by nicoladidsbury on 21st Jan 2005. Hazel Moor Enclosure A difficult site to photograph. Kings Well lies in the fold of land just below the stone wall, where the wall turns to the left. Rising up from this point and going between the two trees, is a very large earth bank, up to five feet high in places. This bank leads up to the plateau of Hazel Moor, which is enclosed with further banks. There also appears to be a bank to the left hand side of the photo

There are possibly two? more further down the field, and made me wonder if it was a stone row. Photo taken on full zoom.
