Dervaig SSE

Dervaig SSE submitted by nicoladidsbury on 29th May 2005. Dervaig SSE, all tied up. This stone is used as part of a fence, and all tied up with wire. Over the wall, there is a flat plaform, which looks man made, and has views down into the valley. A very good defensive position.

Devil's Arrows

Devil's Arrows submitted by nicoladidsbury on 27th Jul 2004. Devils Arrows, Boroughbridge; SE391665 These are incredibly tall stones. I found myself wondering how deep into the the ground they go. This picture shows all three stone, but the third stone is hidden in the shadows of the trees in the distance. Beautiful stones well worth the diversion off the A1.

Din Lligwy submitted by nicoladidsbury on 27th Apr 2006. Din Lligwy Ancient Settlement The photo shows the size of the stones flanking the doorway into one of the "huts". This place is so impressive. And so peaceful. The sun was very low when we were there, and we were the only people. The only other sounds was the breeze in the trees that surround the settlement and the birds. A magic place.

Filitosa Central Monument

Filitosa Central Monument submitted by nicoladidsbury on 9th Jun 2004. Corsica On road D57 north of Propriano Filitosa, the mysterious, and most celebrated prehistoric site on Corsica. There are six menhir statues aligned on the central monument, with steps leading up to the highest point. This enclosure is thought to have been a temple. The statues have carved human faces, wearing helmets and some carry weapons. In fact some of the statues are very phallic, and its suggested they may have been used to encourage fertility of the land.

Four Stones Hill Standing Stones

Four Stones Hill Standing Stones submitted by nicoladidsbury on 11th Jan 2005. Standing Stones at Four Stones Hill near Haweswater Two stones remain, just below the summit of Four Stones Hill. One of the stones is leaning towards its neighbour, and looks like it may fall. There are excellent views from the stones down to the reservoir, and over to the magnificent fells of high street and Kidsy Pike. A great place to go for a walk, but I didn't feel any special ambience there, I rather thought the stones looked like two gate posts. Perhaps I should revisit witho...

Half the circle has been eroded by the river running by leaving only a semi circle. The stones stand on a low earth bank. Close by are the Loupin Stanes. We visited this circle on a beautiful hot day in summer, there was no one else around, it was a very peaceful place to be.
