London Stone
Date Added: 18th Apr 2011
Site Type: Marker Stone
Country: England (Greater London)
Visited: Yes

London Stone submitted by Thorgrim on 1st Apr 2004. Once considered to be the guardian of the City and the place where all distances from London were measured, the London Stone now sits almost forgotten in a little glass box set into the wall of 111, Cannon Street opposite the Underground Station at TQ326809. Very difficult to photograph because of the internal light and glass. It is very low to the pavement and I put my compact digital to the glass and hoped for the best!
The Stone is a fragment of oolithic limestone and must have been brou...

Cleopatra's Needle (London) submitted by Thorgrim on 26th Mar 2006. The oldest man-made object in London can be seen on the Embankment. Its height makes our homegrown standing stones look quite stunted. See main site page for more information

Beacon Hill (Burghclere) submitted by h_fenton on 20th Mar 2011. Beacon Hill from the south, showing the entrance to the hillfort.
I couldn't get a photo that showed the whole fort because it is rather an awkward shape.

Country: England (Norfolk)
Visited: Yes

Grime's Graves Flint Mines submitted by Thorgrim on 8th Jun 2004. Galleries radiate out from the bottom of the mine shaft in search of the top quality "floorstone" flint. They are only two or three feet high and would have been a tight squeeze

Stanton Drew - Avenue
Date Added: 18th Apr 2011
Site Type: Multiple Stone Rows / Avenue
Country: England (Somerset)
Visited: Would like to visit
Stanton Drew - Avenue submitted by TimPrevett on 18th Aug 2006. For evidence of the avenue, go past the NE circle, and look for the linear earthwork. The line is visible here on the LH corner of the picture; the group is on another part of the earthwork. Looking on the aerial pics, and on the ground, this can be traced from 3 o'clock to 12 o'clock outside the Great and NE circles. I did have an excellent picture of this from the ground, but have accidentally overwritten it!

Sacred Spring, Bath submitted by Thorgrim on 8th Aug 2004. The hot springs still rise at Bath. Sacred to Sulis long before the coming of the Romans. Tourists stand in awe of the Roman outflow, but that is merely a drain. Here where the hot water bubbles up from the earth is the real mystery.

Site Type: Cave or Rock Shelter
Country: England (Somerset)
Visited: Yes
Wookey Hole Caves submitted by JimChampion on 26th Aug 2008. Fairly standard picture from one of the first caverns (The so-called Witch's Kitchen) at Wookey Hole caves. The water is the River Axe, which soon after this point emerges into the open. Bear in mind that the water level in the caves was raised by the construction of Wookey Hole mill in the 17th century (and even further back with the mill recorded in the Domesday Book). The caves were used by palaeolithic humans and again by people in the Iron Age. In the past hundred years they have been devel...
