Date Added: 26th Feb 2012
Site Type: Stone Circle Country: Scotland (Aberdeenshire)
Visited: Yes on 29th Oct 2011. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4 Access 2

Auld Kirk O Tough

Auld Kirk O Tough submitted by megalithicmatt on 2nd Nov 2011. Photo looking south-ish. One of only two stones standing. A drystane dyke lines up with this stone but whether or not it stands in its original position is unclear as the site is badly damaged. A bank curves round behind the stones to the north and a vague hump, possibly the remains of a cairn, lies in the centre. The drystane dyke further down the field towards Denwell farmyard has several large and long stones built into the base.

Log Text: Longish walk uphill needed to get there from the Corrennie Wood minor road. The site is very small and damaged from earthworks and a drystane dyke. Met an old farmer there who reminisced about long winters 70 years ago.

Log Text: I think Julian Cope described the recumbent as looking like a 'smashed tank' or somesuch similar thing. Definitely appropriate as the ruins of the rest of the site looks like a battlefield.

Mither Tap

Mither Tap submitted by cosmic on 28th Dec 2003. Mither Tap at NJ 682 224 This the third highest hill fort surrounds the bare granite rock outcrop of the most easterly of the Bennachie summits. Although not the highest point of the Bennachie massif it is the most prominent. The site was occupied between 1000BC and 1000AD with at least two sets of defences. The main defence, formed by a well-built stone wall running from N to SE about 30 m below the summit of the outcrop, is clearly marked. In places, the wall-faces and traces of a...
