Log Text: While I was travelling back home from John O' Groats, I decided to revisit South Yarrows Archaeological Trail with a fresh eye, having 10 years of antiquarian meanderings under my belt. I found that I understood more details of the sites on my revisit. South Yarrows Archaeological Trail is thoroughly recommended!

Log Text: Warrior's Rest Standing Stone is a yard away from the gable end of Warrior's Rest Cottage. The cottage was unoccupied when I visited so there was no-one to ask permission.

Log Text: Music Water Standing Stone can be seen from the road for St Eval. It is easy to park and visit via a convenient gateway. The tall irregular stone is good value for energy expended.

Log Text: Water of Deugh Cairn is off the beaten track hidden in forestry c. 7 miles N of Carsphairn. It was difficult to find, via a boggy forest ride, into a large clearing. The remains of Water of Deugh Cairn are quite impressive with two exposed chambers and extensive stone structures visible. A modern dry stane dyke has been built on the cairn and an unwelcome Spruce tree has rooted close to a chamber.

Log Text: Water of Deugh cairn is inside a restricted access construction zone for a wind farm. There was no completion date posted so it may be some time before Water of Deugh is accessible. Having been denied access by Red Tape I decided to approach Water of Deugh from another angle. It is possible to approach Water of Deugh by parking up in a passing place at NS 55614 01036 on the dead-end lane. Water of Deugh Cairn lies c. 250 yards WNW from this point. Unfortunately it is a stiff walk up a tree felled No Man's Land slope to reach the edge of the forest. On reaching the forest edge to look for a suitable forest ride I found multiple fallen trees forming an impenetrable barrier. At this point I took the hint and gave up.

Log Text: West Cairngaan Stone has been given a spring clean since my last visit in 2011. All of the field clearance stones have been removed leaving West Cairngaan Stone high and dry on a E-W rocky earth plinth. It is visible from the West Tarbet Path which starts at West Cairngaan Farm. Follow the path E then turn S to reach a gate at NX 13093 31346. West Cairngaan Stone is located in an arable field c. 200 yards E of the gateway.

Log Text: West Kennet Avenue is one of my favourite sites. Unlike Avebury stone circles it is not surrounded by modernity. One can easily imagine a ceremonial procession up West Kennet Avenue leading to the majesty of Avebury Stone Circles.

Log Text: White Laise Cairn is not an easy cairn to find. It is well off the beaten track, hidden in moorland W of Loch Doon in East Ayrshire. I have a fatal attraction to these difficult sites. It is accessed by a c. 0.4 mile yomp over open boggy moorland W of Loch Doon Caravan Park. My walking route is viewable on White Laise Cairn. Try to follow a WNW bearing from the S edge of the trees at the caravan park. Use 4x4 tracks and sheep paths as much as possible. The cairn is uphill all the way, only becoming visible when you are c. 50 yards W of it. It is surrounded by a ring of ferns. Stout Footwear and GPS Navigation are essential.

Log Text: Take the A747 Port William turn off the A75 at Glenluce. Take the first exit to Wigtown off the small roundabout in the centre of Port William. Follow the B7085 for 0.8 miles to reach an unsigned sharp right turn towards Monreith. Follow the lane for c. 0.2 miles to the gates of Monreith Estate. It is possible to park at the estate gate. A muddy track is followed for c. 0.4 mile past the private road to Monreith House to a Y-junction. Take the right turn for c. 400 yards to reach a path heading N into the wood surrounding the loch. Follow the winding path for c. 200 yards to the crannog in the SE corner of White Loch of Myrton. If you want to see the crannog from the W, return to the Y-junction, take the left path for c. 400 yards. My route is viewable on White Loch of Myrton.

Whiteholme Rig submitted by Anne T on 7th Aug 2016. The first stone in this ancient monument that we saw from the edge of the adjacent field. The farmer hadn't made it easy for visitors to reach this stone circle, and it was a real shame the ground had been left to go wild, which made it difficult to make out any monument at all.

Log Text: The satisfaction of finding this stone circle exceeds the visual impact of the site. This shy retiring monument is the polar opposite of Stonehenge, a low lying circle of 7 recumbent stones set in a rural location.
