Log Text: Cairnennock Cairn is a relatively well preserved white cairn in moorland above Loch Muck in East Ayrshire. It is possible to park just N of Eriff Farm. A path leads through the farm round Loch Muck. When you reach a sheepfold head W up the moorland. After c 150 yards you will see the marker cairn on the horizon.

Log Text: It took detailed planning and cost me a lot of energy to find this cairn, literally in the middle of nowhere. However seeing the mound rising above the chaos of tree debris made it all worthwhile.

Log Text: White Laise Cairn is not an easy cairn to find. It is well off the beaten track, hidden in moorland W of Loch Doon in East Ayrshire. I have a fatal attraction to these difficult sites. It is accessed by a c. 0.4 mile yomp over open boggy moorland W of Loch Doon Caravan Park. My walking route is viewable on White Laise Cairn. Try to follow a WNW bearing from the S edge of the trees at the caravan park. Use 4x4 tracks and sheep paths as much as possible. The cairn is uphill all the way, only becoming visible when you are c. 50 yards W of it. It is surrounded by a ring of ferns. Stout Footwear and GPS Navigation are essential.

Log Text: Fell of Loch Ronald Cairn is not easy to find but the route to it is a wide track until the last 200 yards on rough terrain. The cairn has been badly mauled by forest ploughing however an excavated cist with six large stones has survived. GPS navigation is essential to locate the hidden cist.

Log Text: Carscreugh S Cairn is a relatively well preserved grassy mound in pasture on Caescreugh Farm. It is accessed via a road leading to Carscreugh Wind Farm. It is only a short walk from the entrance of the wind farm to the cairn. See the main page for details.

Log Text: The construction of tracks within Carsreugh Wind Farm has made access to Carsreugh N Cairn easier. No unauthorised vehicles are allowed within the wind farm but you are allowed to walk or cycle. The route is easy walking except for the last 200 yards through rough moorland. See main page for directions to the cairn.

Log Text: The walk to Culquhasen SE Cairn is not straightforward. This route involves a walk of 0.25 miles along the A747 Port William road. Care should be taken: cars tend to drive fast around a sharp corner. The cross country route is an assault course: It includes crossing 3 dry stane dykes and a burn but no electric fences fortunately. Wellies are essential for this walk due to the burn crossing. My route is viewable on Culquhasen SE.

Log Text: Turn onto Church Road off Main Street in Kirkcolm. Kirkcolm New Church is c. 200 yards up the hill. The cross is on the east side of the church. There are intricate carvings on the NW and SE faces.

Log Text: St Columba's Well is in Corsewall Estate in Kirkcolm. The domed stone structure covering the well looks very modern but it is only a 250 yard stroll from the car park in the centre of Kirkcolm.

Log Text: St Mary's Well is easy to visit but it has been enclosed by a modern concrete pipe. It is barely worth the effort to locate it. There is no sign of a stone slab at the well.

Log Text: I have been driving past this stone for more years than I care to remember. It is often surrounded by potatoes and vegetation. When I saw the naked standing stone I knew I had to record it for posterity.

Log Text: Low Airyolland Cairn is easily visited by following the Southern Upland Way S of Cruise Farm. The biggest problem is parking: It is not possible to park at Cruise Farm and the grass verge opposite the gate is soft. I chose to park at the first available lay-by c. 0.25 miles S of the gate.

Log Text: Claughreid Stone Circle is difficult to locate due to its remote location over difficult ground. I was unwilling to trudge through boggy moorland so I devised an easier route via a track to Claughreid Farm: Turn off the A75 for Cairn Holy at NX 5164 5305. Follow the sign for Cairn Holy for c. 100 yards then bear right onto an unsigned single track road. Stay on this winding lane for c. 0.4 miles to reach an unsigned track on the left at NX 5207 5313. Follow this dead-end track for a mile to reach a small car park at the end: the track becomes increasingly rough and dirty closer to the end.
The walking route to Claughreid Stone Circle starts at the end of the public road from Barholm Farm to Claughreid Farm. Park up and walk along the track to Claughreid Farm. Head W through Claughreid Farm then head downhill. Cross over a ford then follow the track through a dry stane dyke. Continue NW for c. 300 yards to go through a gate in the dry stane dyke. Head NNE from the gateway on vague tracks for c. 100 yards to reach Claughreid Stone Circle, partially obscured in moorland. My walking route along this track can be viewed on Claughreid Stone Circle.

Log Text: Auchensoul Hill is located c. 0.8 mile WNW of Barr. You can park in the centre of the village then walk W to cross the Stinchar Bridge. Follow the road N to reach a signed footpath on the left. The vague path heads W uphill through moorland grass. Trees have been recently planted on the E slopes of Auchensoul Hill, surrounded by a deer fence. Continue W along the line of the deer fence until you reach a gate in the deer fence. Go through the gate into rough green pasture. Head NW up a steep slope towards the summit of Auchensoul Hill. It is a rocky knoll surmounted by an OS Trig Point at NX 26391 94548.
The vague path up to Auchensoul Hill is steep through boggy moorland ground,
requiring sturdy boots and GPS navigation ideally.

Log Text: Cairn Macneilie (Inch Parks) is a wooded mound on the W edge of Stair Estates. It has been colonised by mature trees on its slopes and summit. Views from the cairn are now restricted by trees but they would have been extensive before afforestation.
