Log Text: The ruinous condition of Balnuaran of Clava E Cairn is a marked contrast of the restored Clava Cairns to the W. Nevertheless, the cairn is worth a short detour. Go through the gate opposite the car park then walk S for c. 45 yards to reach the E arc of Balnuaran of Clava E Cairn. There is a prominent hawthorn tree on the SE perimeter.

Log Text: Balnuaran of Clava Kerb Cairn is the odd one out at Balnauran: the unrestored circle of stones is small and mysterious compared to the restored large Clava Cairns around it.

Log Text: Even in Kilmartin Glen where one is spoiled for choice Baluachcraig Cup and Ring Marked panels are worth a visit. Easy parking plus a short walk to an ancient site rich in Rock Art: It's a no brainer!

Log Text: When visiting Dun Telve and Dun Troddan most people turn around but if you continue c. 1 mile to the end of the road you will drive past Balvraid Chambered Cairn and reach a path to Dun Grugaig. Balvraid Chambered Cairn is a robbed chambered cairn with a large capstone and exposed chamber.

Log Text: As with many cairns built in farmland the temptation to borrow the stones for a more practical purpose has proved too great so we are left with the footprint of the original cairn. It is easy to visit from the minor road between Newton Stewart and RSPB Wood of Cree Reserve.

Log Text: Sometimes I almost regret my decision to visit a remote site. The ground underfoot from the edge of Knockman Wood onward was so frustrating that I am not going repeat this particular journey anytime soon.

Log Text: I am always amazed that anyone should deliberately chose to build a dry stane dyke directly across an ancient site. To rub salt into the wounds, Bardennoch Cairn probably provided the raw materials for the dyke's constuction. That said, it is a worthwhile visit especially if you continue on to the Braidenoch Cross Slabs.

Log Text: Bardristane 1 Carved Stone features several cup and ring carvings on its NNW face. There is a horizontal crack with grass sprouting from it one third from the top of the panel. The cup and ring carvings are featured in the portion of the panel below the crack. In normal daylight only one deep cup and ring are visible.

Log Text: Barhoise Cairn is not in a great state of preservation. The interior of the the cairn is entirely robbed out with a deposit of field clearance stones dumped on the N quadrant. However it is still recognisably a cairn and worth visiting while in the area.

Log Text: I was suffering from Stone-Fatigue after a week in and around Carnac. I opted to drive for 3 hours to Cairn de Barnenez as a relaxing change. The monument was well sign-posted. The entry fee was a reasonable 6 euros. The epic scale of Cairn de Barnenez was intimidating at first. There are 11 parallel dolmens in the cairn running SE-NW, however all but one of the passages are closed to the public. It took me 45 minutes to fully capture the essence of the monument. Cairn de Barnenez is a recommended visit.

Log Text: Barnhouse Settlement is the closest habitation to the Stones of Stenness marking it as an important site. The site is easy to visit from Stenness. It presents reconstructed floorplans of multiple buildings in the settlement making it easier to imagine how the original may have looked.

Log Text: Barnhouse Stone is surrounded by the Stones of Stenness, the Watch Stone and Maeshowe. This is tough company to compete with. It also implies it could be important to be erected in such an important area. The c. 10 feet tall stone slab stand in splendid isolation in an arable field c. 0.5 mile SE of the Stones of Stenness. It deserves to be visited.

Log Text: Take the A747 Portwilliam turn off the A75 at Glenluce. Follow the road for c. 1.8 miles to reach a left turn signed for Whithorn Way. Stay on this single track road for c. 1 mile to reach a left turn signed for Craigenveoch via a forest track. There is a lay-by on the edge of the loch after c. 100 yards if you want to park up. Continue on foot or by car for c. 0.2 miles to reach a parking place at Knock of Luce Wood. Walk c. 200 yards W along a grass track leading to a dead-end. Take the loch side path for on the left for c. 200 yards to reach NSF Scotland Woodland Garden. Take a path NW starting at the NSF Scotland info board. Head W towards an obvious gap in the stone wall. Wellies are required from this point. Cross a stream then head N parallel to the stone wall through boggy shrubby ground for c. 100 yards to reach Barnsallie Fell Cairn, shrouded in small trees.

Log Text: Barnshangan E Cairn is an unusually stony cairn, given its location on farmland. There has been extensive quarrying on the N half, but the S half has a good covering of stones.

Log Text: Take the W turn to Glenluce off the A75. Turn left for New Luce after 0.2 mile. Stay on this road for c. 5 miles to reach New Luce. Park on Main Street. Walk straight on at the top of Main Street for c. 300 yards to reach Barnshangan Farm track. Follow the farm track for c. 0.6 mile to a gate on the right at NX 18156 65377. Head S into the field for 75 yards then SE towards a gate into an adjacent field. Barnshangan W Cairn is c. 75 yards NE from here. Return to the farm track then walk c. 400 yards E to NX 18429 65423. Barnshangan E Cairn is c. 50 yards to the right, next to a dry stane dyke.

Log Text: Barp Reineval is a largely intact massive chambered cairn c. 0.5 mile SE of Mingarry/Mingearraidh in the centre of South Uist. The stony mound has intermittent large standing stones on the perimeter, remains of a peristalith. The subcircular cairn measures c. 75 feet in diameter and 12 feet high. The chamber entrance is located on the ESE perimeter.
Directions to Barp Reineval Chambered Cairn: Take the Mingarry/Mingearraidh turn off the A865 in South Uist. After c. 0.2 mile you can park up at a Y-Junction at a cattle grid. Turn right along a narrow lane heading NW for c. 0.5 mile. Walk S across rough moorland for c. 120 yards towards an obvious stony mound, Barp Reineval.
