Cairn Kenny submitted by mickm on 17th Mar 2005. A view of the ravaged interior of this single-chambered Bargrennan type cairn, showing the visible remains of the chamber and passage, most of which is concealed by redeposited cairn material. The chamber is aligned west to east with the passage entered from the east. There was a peristalith of closely spaced stones around the cairn, a few of which remain visible on the northeast side. There has evidently been some antiquarian excavation and according to the RCAHMS the cairn was subject to distu...

Log Text: Cairn Kenny is located in isolated moorland c. 2 miles from the nearest road: it is doubtful that it was worth the trouble to visit a ruined cairn.

Log Text: It is possible to visit Cairn Avel, a well preserved large cairn, if you go straight on at the point where Carnavel Farm paddock joins the path up the hill. Cairn Avel lies c. 300 yards E across boggy ground. Follow the drier margin round the field to avoid the bog. The walk up to the cross slabs is relatively steep but you are rewarded by two bonus cairns and scenic views.

Log Text: Cairn Macneilie (Inch Parks) is a wooded mound on the W edge of Stair Estates. It has been colonised by mature trees on its slopes and summit. Views from the cairn are now restricted by trees but they would have been extensive before afforestation.

Log Text: Carn Ban (Lochgilphead) is a grassy mound on the S bank of the Crinan Canal on the E end of Cairnbaan. It is accessed via a forest track into Knapdale Forest which starts c. 75 yards W of the swing bridge in Cairnbaan. The cairn is unspectacular save for a large moss covered capstone on an exposed cist.

Chapel Carn Brea Tomb submitted by TheCaptain on 9th Aug 2022. Could it once have been a bit like Carn Gloose, with a large internal cairn surrounded by a ring, with at least one chamber?

Carn Euny Village submitted by AngieLake on 31st Oct 2004. This view over the Carn Euny Settlement was taken in two shots, which are cobbled together to give an idea of how it looked in March 2004. Bec-Zog's pic is similar to this.

Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 21st Mar 2013. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 5 Access 4

Carn Euny Fogou submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Jan 2005. This shot shows the huge but low (4.5ft - 1.4m) SE-facing doorway of the Carn Euny 'Beehive Hut' underground chamber, with its own short passage leading into the fogou passage which runs SW/NE, (but snaking here with a flatter, more W/E run), just outside the doorway. It is thought that the Beehive Hut (chamber) was the first structure on this site, so that originally the eastern wall of the fogou passage would not have obstructed the view. It is possible that the sun was meant to shine down t...

Log Text: Carn Euny is the most complete fogou I have ever visited: the round chamber is particularly impressive. If you are in the area it is a compulsory detour.

Log Text: It is ironic that so many antiquarians have driven past this stony cairn crossing the Ballachulish Bridge to and from Fort William, yet so few have stopped to visit it. The cairn is not particularly impressive but it has good southern views.

Log Text: The circle of mature trees surrounding a naked cist with a massive capstone is one of my favourite sites. The trees both protect and add an air of mystery to the ancient monument.

Carn Liath (Kensaleyre)
Date Added: 28th May 2025
Site Type: Chambered Cairn
Country: Scotland (Isle of Skye)
Visited: Yes on 9th Aug 2011. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 3

Carn Liath (Kensaleyre) submitted by jeffrep on 25th Jul 2013. The Carn Liath Chambered Cairn is located in a field off the A87 just south of Kensaleyre opposite the turn off to Rhenetra on the Isle of Skye, Highland, Scotland. It is the largest of a cluster of cairns here, and is easy to see from a distance, because the stones from which it is constructed are covered with such white lichen that they appear to have been painted.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: There are two difficulties in visiting Carn Liath (Kensaleyre): the lack of parking and the lack of a path. My best compromise was to park in the Church of Scotland Car Park, walk c. 300 yards along the A87 then take a cross country route c. 650 yards WSW across rough boggy ground to Carn Liath (Kensaleyre). My walking route can be viewed on Carn Liath (Kensaleyre).

Carn Liath (Skye) submitted by Andy B on 13th Apr 2010. A neolithic chambered burial cairn above the east shore of Loch Snizort. A couple of the chambers are discernible, but most of the stones have been tumbled, or plundered for dyke building.

Log Text: I was staying in Monkstadt for a week so I thought it would be relatively easy to visit Carn Liath (Kilmuir) located c. 1 mile N along the coast. As usual, 1 mile on the ground was a harder proposition than 1 mile on the map. The terrain was rough and boggy in places making progress slow. I was able to find the remains of the cairn on the N side of a dry stane dyke running ENE-WSW: The cairn has been bisected by the dry stane dyke. Canmore suggests that the S half of the cairn has been reduced to ground level. I observed two standing stones around 6 feet from the edge of the W Arc. They may be remnants of a peristalith.
