Log Text: When I visited Cullernie Ring Cairn the field was in grass. I parked carefully in the wide junction of the A96 with Lower Cullernie Farm. There is a gate opposite the junction. This enabled me to walk safely along the margin of the field back to Cullernie Ring Cairn. It is not well preserved but it is still worth a visit if the field is not in crop.

Allanfearn

Allanfearn

Allanfearn submitted by TimPrevett on 31st Oct 2006. "Allanfearn" Chambered Cairn taken as the Rapsons bus whizzes along the A96. RCAHMS appears not to list it, so any more info appreciated.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Culloden Cairn is a ruined cairn c. 25 yards NW of the A96 near Allanfearn Farm. The obvious feature of the cairn is an erect square pillar c. 5 feet high on the S Arc. There is a jumble of large recumbent stones on the grassy surface, possibly field clearance stones.

Dalcross Mains

Dalcross Mains

Dalcross Mains submitted by madmark23 on 23rd Oct 2015. A Professor comes and speaks to this cairn once a year.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: If you are visiting the Clava Cairns at Balnuaran it is a short detour to Dalcross Mains Clava Cairn. This unrestored site is an interesting contrast to the restored cairns. It has been subjected to extensive stone removal leaving a semi-circle of kerb stones on a grassy knoll with trees round the perimeter.

Cantraybruich

Cantraybruich

Cantraybruich submitted by PeteCrane5 on 2nd Sep 2024. Four of the remain stones of Cantraybruich ... thought to be what's left of a Clava Cairn
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The obvious remains of Cantraybruich Cairn are an arc of several standing stones on the grassy margin in the E corner of a field. It has been speculated that it is a destroyed Clava Cairn. In reality, the site is a jumble of recumbent stones which is difficult to interpret.

Daviot Ring Cairn

Date Added: 3rd Aug 2025
Site Type: Stone Circle Country: Scotland (Highlands)

Daviot Ring Cairn

Daviot Ring Cairn submitted by steveco on 24th Feb 2002. Daviot Cairn & Circle NH727411. Surviving part of Clava type cairn and outer circle.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Daviot Ring Cairn has 2 standing stone 20 feet S of the S Arc, sole remnants of a stone circle enclosing the ring cairn. It is defined by a round grassy platform with intermittent kerb stones up to c. 2 feet high in the centre.

Auldearn Stone Row

Auldearn Stone Row

Auldearn Stone Row submitted by SandyG on 3rd Jan 2019. Looking south east along the row. Stone 1 in the foreground, Stone 2 beyond and Stone 3 indicated by the white arrow.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I manage to locate 3 stones on the SE end of the row, ending on the edge of a private garden. The stones are hidden in trees. I failed to investigate the NW end of the stone row and the cairn. I will rectify this if I return to the area.

Mains of Clava SE

Mains of Clava SE

Mains of Clava SE submitted by markj99 on 20th Dec 2020. The 45 degree SE arc of Mains of Clava SE Cairn consists of 5 stones.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Mains of Clava SE Cairn is located c. 350 yards NE of the Balnuarin of Clava Car Park. The ruined cairn lies c. 15 yards SE of the road in scrubland. The obvious remains of the cairn are a standing stone c. 3 feet high in the centre of 5 stones delineating the SE arc of the cairn.

Balnuaran of Clava E

Date Added: 28th Apr 2025
Site Type: Clava Cairn Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 21st Mar 2012. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4 Access 4

Balnuaran of Clava E

Balnuaran of Clava E submitted by Klingon on 27th Feb 2006. Remains of a destroyed cairn just across the street next to the Clava Cairns.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The ruinous condition of Balnuaran of Clava E Cairn is a marked contrast of the restored Clava Cairns to the W. Nevertheless, the cairn is worth a short detour. Go through the gate opposite the car park then walk S for c. 45 yards to reach the E arc of Balnuaran of Clava E Cairn. There is a prominent hawthorn tree on the SE perimeter.

Avielochan

Avielochan

Avielochan submitted by cosmic on 25th Sep 2006. Chamber from North.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Avielochan Clava Cairn is sandwiched between the A95 and the railway line. Despite this the site has a peaceful ambience, promoted by the ring of mature trees which surround the cairn. The kerb is delineated by c. 10 trees and intermittent large stones. The interior has been robbed out exposing a stone lined passage to a central chamber.
I prefer this somewhat neglected Clava cairn to the over-restored cairns at Balnuaran.

Dun Bornaskitaig

Dun Bornaskitaig

Dun Bornaskitaig submitted by hamilton on 17th Sep 2014. The scant remnants of Dun Bornaskitaig sit atop this eminence, less then 100 metres east of the coastline at Kilmuir on the Trotternish peninsula.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The remains of the broch on Dun Bornaskitaig are mostly hidden under a grassy bank up to c. 4 feet high round the perimeter of the dun. There are several building constructed from the broch's stones in the vicinity of the dun.

Carn Liath (Skye)

Carn Liath (Skye) submitted by Andy B on 13th Apr 2010. A neolithic chambered burial cairn above the east shore of Loch Snizort. A couple of the chambers are discernible, but most of the stones have been tumbled, or plundered for dyke building. Copyright John Allan and licensed for reuse under the Creative Commons Licence.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I was staying in Monkstadt for a week so I thought it would be relatively easy to visit Carn Liath (Kilmuir) located c. 1 mile N along the coast. As usual, 1 mile on the ground was a harder proposition than 1 mile on the map. The terrain was rough and boggy in places making progress slow. I was able to find the remains of the cairn on the N side of a dry stane dyke running ENE-WSW: The cairn has been bisected by the dry stane dyke. Canmore suggests that the S half of the cairn has been reduced to ground level. I observed two standing stones around 6 feet from the edge of the W Arc. They may be remnants of a peristalith.

Log Text: Blairbuy 11 Carved Panel can be hard to spot due to the faint cup and ring markings. Walk 10 yards E from Blairbuy 6 to locate this flat rock at ground level.

Blairbuy 3

Blairbuy 3 submitted by markj99 on 27th Mar 2019. Blairbuy 3, 5 concentric rings clearly visible.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Blairbuy 3 was hidden by whins however it was a large cup & 6 rings marking. It was less worn than the Rock Art lying prone in the fields probably due to it's sheltered location.

Blairbuy 5

Blairbuy 5 submitted by SolarMegalith on 6th Sep 2015. Blairbuy 5 - cup with single ring is the only motif on this panel (photo taken on June 2015).
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Blairbuy 5 is a small deep-cut cup and ring marking on a rock ledge in whins c. 200 yards ESE from the summit cairn of Fell of Barhullion. (Canmore ID 62770)

Blairbuy 6 submitted by SolarMegalith on 28th Sep 2013. Cups with single rings on Blairbuy 6 panel (photo taken on September 2013).
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This rock is on high ground on the edge of a small plantation. I observed a deep cup and ring marking, a shallow cup and ring marking and an unusual double parallel groove carving on the panel.

Auld Wife's Grave submitted by markj99 on 12th Sep 2018. Approaching the Auld Wife's Grave
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Auld Wife's Grave is difficult to find in open moorland. However, if you can get to Cairnscarrow Trig Point at NX 13626 64802 there is a clear path bearing NNW from here. Follow it for c. 200m straight to Auld Wife's Grave.

Balnuaran of Clava (Stone)

Date Added: 28th Apr 2025
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 2nd Nov 2011. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4 Access 3

Balnuaran of Clava (Stone)

Balnuaran of Clava (Stone) submitted by Cosmic on 6th Jan 2004. NH758446 Standing stone to East of Balnuaran of Clava Cairns - only about two hundred yards away but not on OS Map. Access is along a long straight country lane (from the East, West end blocked off) that was probably drive way to a big house - trees either side. Stone itself about six feet high.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Canmore suggests that this standing stone is all that remains of a clava cairn. Rather than mourn the loss of a cairn, perhaps it is better to celebrate the survival of a handsome standing stone.

Balnuaran of Clava SW

1) I hate sites with too many people.
2) I dislike over-restored sites.
Despite these issues the Balnuaran Clava Cairns are quite impressive if you visit out of season.
