Log Text: Windy Edge Long Cairn is tough place to reach through forest rides and rough moorland. However this spectacular cairn is worth all the effort. The isolated location gives the site an increased gravitas.

Poldean

Poldean submitted by Apocryphus on 20th Jan 2019. A smaller stone located opposite Poldean Farm on a minor road south of Moffat
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Poldean menhir is not the most spectacular standing stone, however it is adjacent to a road so why not stop when passing by.

Bailiehill Fort

Bailiehill Fort

Bailiehill Fort submitted by markj99 on 1st May 2021. Inside a defensive rampart and ditch defense of Bailiehill Fort.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Baliehill Fort is located between Lockerbie and Langholm in a rural setting. It is situated atop a steep climb up Camp Hill from a lay-by at NY 25315 90657. The remnants of the forts defenses are visible on the slope of the hill but the enclosures are relatively featureless.

Whiteholme Rig

Date Added: 13th Mar 2022
Site Type: Stone Circle Country: Scotland (Dumfries and Galloway)
Visited: Yes on 19th May 2012. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 4

Whiteholme Rig

Whiteholme Rig submitted by Anne T on 7th Aug 2016. The first stone in this ancient monument that we saw from the edge of the adjacent field. The farmer hadn't made it easy for visitors to reach this stone circle, and it was a real shame the ground had been left to go wild, which made it difficult to make out any monument at all.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The satisfaction of finding this stone circle exceeds the visual impact of the site. This shy retiring monument is the polar opposite of Stonehenge, a low lying circle of 7 recumbent stones set in a rural location.

Castle O'er Fort

Date Added: 16th Jun 2025

Log Text: Hillforts are one of my least favourite type of sites: it takes time and effort to investigate all the humps and hollows. Castle O'er Hillfort is no exception. I arrived at a satisfactory understanding after an hour of wandering up and down.

Water of Deugh

Date Added: 9th Jun 2021
Site Type: Chambered Cairn Country: Scotland (Dumfries and Galloway)
Visited: Yes on 5th May 2012. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 5 Access 3

Water of Deugh

Water of Deugh submitted by markj99 on 22nd Nov 2020. Water of Deugh S Chamber
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Water of Deugh Cairn is off the beaten track hidden in forestry c. 7 miles N of Carsphairn. It was difficult to find, via a boggy forest ride, into a large clearing. The remains of Water of Deugh Cairn are quite impressive with two exposed chambers and extensive stone structures visible. A modern dry stane dyke has been built on the cairn and an unwelcome Spruce tree has rooted close to a chamber.

Log Text: The circle of mature trees surrounding a naked cist with a massive capstone is one of my favourite sites. The trees both protect and add an air of mystery to the ancient monument.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Ardvannie Cairn is a forgotten cairn despite its proximity to the A836. I doubt many people visit and nature is slowly enveloping the remains.

Cawdor

Cawdor submitted by Cosmic on 11th Nov 2003. Standing stone in a field at NH857508. It was near the end of the day so didn't get out to inspect - photos taken from road to the West.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Cawdor Stone was easy to visit but couldn't be accessed closely due to the field being in crop at my time of visit. Fortunately the stone is relatively close to the edge of the field for photographic purposes.

Delfour

Date Added: 9th Aug 2025
Site Type: Cairn Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 23rd Mar 2012. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 4

Delfour

Delfour submitted by cosmic on 27th Sep 2006. Delfour from North
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: It is surprising that there are substantial remains of Delfour Ring Cairn given its proximity to Mid & Easter Delfour Farms: most cairns located in arable land have been robbed out for construction of buildings and walls over the ages. There is a standing stone on the SW perimeter of Delfour Ring Cairn, sole survivor of an outer stone circle. The ring cairn has fared better with discernible inner and outer rings enclosed by large kerb stones.

Druidtemple

Druidtemple submitted by AdamCircle on 5th May 2024. A lovely sketch by the late Bruce Adams to introduce this photo and art album he made. Stone Circles and Clava cairns around Inverness, all scanned ready to browse, either on Flickr or PDF here
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Druidtemple Clava Cairn is hidden in a square wood on the southern edge of Inverness, the trees protecting it from the encroaching houses. There are several standing stones, survivors of an outer stone circle and an almost intact kerb defining the cairn. The monument is encircled by mature trees.
