Ballach-a-Heathry

Ballach-a-Heathry submitted by markj99 on 25th Mar 2020. Field clearance stones on Ballach-a-Heathry cairn.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: When I revisited Ballach-a-Heathry Cairn it's condition was much improved. The large field clearance stones had been removed, leaving a grassy plateau sloping S-N. The perimeter of the cairn was more sharply defined with steep edges. The cairn has an irregular elongated oval footprint. It is situated c. 180 yards SW of a convenient gate with adjacent parking space.

Balker Moor N submitted by markj99 on 23rd Mar 2025. Balker Moor N Cairn viewed from N.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: A visit to Balker Moor N Cairn has two problems: Firstly, the route to the cairn requires walking half a mile over uneven boggy moorland and secondly, the cairn is very difficult to find. All that remains is an earth bank on the N Arc of the cairn with several kerb stones. I didn't even mention that I had a close encounter with a stag on my first visit: A large stag accompanied by around 5 hinds were within 150 yards of the S cairn, far from safety. I held my ground nervously before they moved away.

Cairnderry

Cairnderry

Cairnderry submitted by mickm on 17th Mar 2005. View of the cairn looking eastsoutheast up the passage to the northeast chamber. The south chamber is visible to top left and the outline of the 2002 excavations in the quadrant around the northwest chamber can be made out at the top of the picture.

Log Text: On my first visit to Cairnderry Cairn the perimeter and the chambers of the cairn were obscured by vegetation making interpretation difficult.

Log Text: On my return visit I found Cairnderry in an improved condition: The kerb of the cairn was discernible and the exposed chambers in the centre of the cairn were free from vegetation. I was able to reconcile the remains of the cairn with the plan.

Cairnderry Cairn is an impressive monument with easy access from the A714, deserving of more visitors.

Kirkdale Burn

Kirkdale Burn

Kirkdale Burn submitted by SumDoood on 23rd Mar 2016. Kirkdale Burn from the north.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: It is all too easy to visit the Cairnholy Chambered Cairns instead of exploring the wider area. Somewhat belatedly, I decided to capture the Kirkdale Burn Cairn. This grassy mound is only a short walk from the Northern Chambered Cairn. Canmore lists multiple carved stones S of the cairn which I intend to investigate.

Log Text: It is somewhat surprising that Cairnholy 7 was only discovered in 2019 given the visibilty and scale of the parallel lines of cup carvings.

Kilhern Spa Well (New Luce) submitted by markj99 on 12th Apr 2025. Kilhern Spa Well viewed from N.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I visited Kilhern Spa Well after an extended dry spell. Most of the boggy areas on the moorland had dried out, however there was a waterlogged marshy area W of Kilhern Spa Well. I was probably the first visitor in a long time despite its proximity to the Southern Upland Way and the Caves of Kilhern.

Cairnholy 6

Cairnholy 6 submitted by sumdoood on 24th Dec 2014. I won't, of course, but I would dearly like to clean this rock the better to see the linear marks on it.

Log Text: I approached Cairnholy 6 from the Cairnholy Carpark walking S through several grass fields. Cairnholy is located c. 140 yards ENE of Cairnholy Sheepfold in a drainage ditch running parallel to a stone wall. Cairnholy Sheepfold is located at NX 51721 54902 (///critic.jetted.nutty) in the NW corner of a grass field containing a large clearance cairn. Log Text: I have visited the Cairnholy Cairns so often I couldn't possibly list them so I recorded my last visit. It was only recently I took more interest in the cup markings on the N Portal stone. I resolved to visit in the soft early light. My resulting photos of the cups were the best I had captured. My pictures are available in Cairnholy 2 (Rock Art) page on TMP.

Log Text: I didn't find any rolling stones (I didn't write the description of this site: I inherited it) but I did find a candidate for a recumbent standing stone on the hillside at NB 17754 34588.

Log Text: There is a significant concentration of ancient sites in Cambret Moor valley probably indicating its importance to the creators of the monuments. It must have been a spectacular vista in its original state. The sites are visited in a linear N-S route from Cambret Hill. The order of the route is Cambret Moor Cairn, Cambret Moor Worked Stone, The Penny Stone, Cauldside Burn N Cairn, Cauldside Burn Stone Setting, Cauldside Burn S Cairn, Cauldside Burn Stone Circle and Cairnharrow Summit Cairn. It is a c. 3 mile return route with c. 400m ascent over rough moorland. Good walking boots and GPS Navigation are required.

Cantraybruich

Cantraybruich submitted by PeteCrane5 on 2nd Sep 2024. Four of the remain stones of Cantraybruich ... thought to be what's left of a Clava Cairn
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The obvious remains of Cantraybruich Cairn are an arc of several standing stones on the grassy margin in the E corner of a field. It has been speculated that it is a destroyed Clava Cairn. In reality, the site is a jumble of recumbent stones which is difficult to interpret.

Lower Camster Stones

Lower Camster Stones

Lower Camster Stones submitted by steveco on 24th Feb 2002. Camster Stone Circle ND260459. Remains of Lower Camster Stone Circle.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Lower Camster Standing Stone are a curious contrast to the Grey Cairns of Camster located c. 1 mile N of the Cairns in flat moorland. The N and S Standing Stones are now dwarfed by Wind Turbines but they still retain a sense of antiquity. The W stone which is adjacent to the road is somewhat less convincing.

Candle Hill

Candle Hill submitted by cosmic on 20th Aug 2005. The only stone left standing
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: It is difficult to access Candle Hill Stone Circle: It is protected by an enclosure and vigorous shrubs. It is best to enter the enclosure on the SE corner adjacent to the remains of the circle. The circle is located c. 30 yards ESE of the centre of the knoll. The most obvious feature is the Candle Stone, a standing stone c. 15 feet W of a thorn tree. A grassy cairn is situated c. 6 feet S in the centre of the circle. Walk S round the cairn to reach the fallen recumbent stone and flankers on the S Arc of the circle. It is possible to find the fallen N,ENE,W and NW stones by walking round the perimeter of the circle, starting from the NNE Standing Stone. The N,ENE,W are largely buried in the turf with only a small area visible from above. The NW stone is hidden in gorse on the NW Arc.

There are a further 9 cairns on the southern slope in varying states of preservation from average to poor. I visited Caradon Hill 4 times from 23.02.23 to 08.06.23 to complete my survey of the 19 cairns.
