Log Text: There is such a wealth of ancient sites on Drennandow Moor, however The Thieves Standing Stone are the best site to my eyes. I feel a magnetic attraction to Standing Stones generally so a pair of six footers are irresistible.

Log Text: I found this recumbent stone when visiting the nearby standing stone but was unsure of its antiquity. It looks like a naked capstone but there are no other stones in the vicinity and the ground is flat. I think the stone is too heavy to be moved so it is probably in its original position.

Log Text: There is a large flat slab with a large rock basin on its upper surface c. 50 yards E of Fyfield Down Polisher Stone. I wonder if the Rock Basin was made by the same people who made the Polisher Stone?

View through the 'goalposts' of the Pipers, neatly framing Stowe's Hill in the distance (home of the Cheesewring natural rock feature and the neolithic enclosure of Stowe's Pound). These two stones stand to the west of the Hurlers stone circles. The dung in the foreground is from the ponies that graze the moor.

Log Text: These standing stones would be the star attraction if the Hurlers Stone Circles were not several hundred yards away. As it is this pair of stone have a strong gravitas.

Log Text: A path leading W starts off Shap Main Street between the tennis court and Croft Avenue. After c. 50 yards the path continues SW across a field for c. 120 yards to a junction of dry stane dykes. The path turns SE along a dry stane dyke for c. 50 yards to reach the substantial recumbent Giant's Foot stone.

Log Text: It nice to find a site that you don't have to walk 3 miles over moorland to visit.
The Galloway Stone is just such a site. Simply leave the M6 at Shap, turn L for Orton, then take the R turn to Salterwath just before the M6 underpass.
The Galloway Stone lies c. 50 yards to the L after 150 yards along this lane.
It looks like a large chunk of Shap Pink Granite so it can't be an erratic from Galloway.
The explanation for it's name may be that it was a marker on the Old Scotch Drove Road for turning onto the Galwaithegate or Galloway Road.
As an additional point of interest there is an Ordnance Survey Bench Mark Bolt on The Galloway Stone denoting a height of 98.8m.

Log Text: The Fiddler Stone is an irregular chest shaped stone in the corner of a field c. 30 yards N of SW 93919 68180. It is difficult to imagine how the stone originally looked.

The Devil's Quoit submitted by Adam Stanford on 16th Nov 2006. Devils Quoit (PEM 25) also known as Broomhill Barrows near Freshwater West. I would suggest this is a collapsed burial chamber rather than earthfast (as stated by Nash 2006, Daniel 1950 and others). I say this because of what looks like a large collapsed orthostat that is now visible and that the capstone rests on. Log Text: Fortunately the field was in grass when I visited so I was able to get close to The Devil's Quoit. It appears to be a collapsed chamber, the sole remnant of a chambered cairn. The chamber is orientated on a NE-SW axis.

Log Text: There is a large lay-by at SD 93769 26809 on Eastwood Road from Todmordern. A path starts here leading to the Bridestones after c. 500 yards on a muddy path (stout footwear recommended). The Bridestones are far enough away from the road to give the unusual weathered stones an isolated special ambiance. The Bride Stone herself is the star attraction, the Groom Stone lies broken by her side.

Log Text: Despite the lack of nearby parking this modern standing stone is well worth a visit. The massive stone is beautifully framed by a horseshoe of trees planted on an earth bank.
