Country: England (Yorkshire (North))
Visited: Yes on 6th Apr 2014. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4 Access 4

Yordas Cave submitted by andy_h on 27th Apr 2004. Previously a Victorian Showcave in which evidence of early human habitation was found. A wonderful place to spend an afternoon exploring with a torch. The highlight being the underground waterfall chamber at the back of the cave.

Log Text: The troglodyte in me can never pass up a chance to explore a cave. Yordas Cave is easily accessible with a bonus waterfall.
Apron Full of Stones
Date Added: 11th Apr 2021
Site Type: Ring Cairn
Country: England (Yorkshire (North))
Visited: Yes on 6th Apr 2014. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 3

Apron Full of Stones submitted by Blingo_von_Trumpenstein on 27th Mar 2017. Apron Full Of Stones ring cairn. Very obvious placement facing the gorge that contains Yordas cave.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: There is a convenient lay by c. 100ft WNW of Apron Full of Stones at SD7065578918. If Kingsdale Beck is in spate there is a bridge c. 200ft N of a lay-by at SD7023078010. The cairn is c. 0.5 mile walk by the river from this point.
Apron Full of Stones is a much reduced cairn however there is sufficient original structure to suggest how impressive it would have been in its low lying landscape. The proximity of Yordas Cave is a bonus.
Robin Hood's Stone
Date Added: 10th Jan 2023
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Merseyside)
Visited: Yes on 4th Apr 2014. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 5

Robin Hood's Stone submitted by vicky on 24th Jan 2004. A close up of Robin Hood's stone showing the weathering grooves.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Robin Hood's Stone is the definitive example of an anachronism, a standing stone in an urban environment. The green iron railings which imprison the standing stone emphasise it's alienation.

Log Text: Bowerman's Nose is one of those splendid oddities which don't have an explanation. They are happy accidents. They don't need to be explained they just exist.

Stannon cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 27th Mar 2005. Cairn circle just east of Stannon Circle on Bodmin Moor.
View looking south westwards at this cairn circle which I found while walking back to my car from Fernacre. A fine set of teeth it has.

Log Text: If you are visiting Stannon Stone Circle why not walk c. 400 yards ESE to locate Stannon Kerbed Cairn, a small cairn with 4 prominent kerb stones and a possible undisturbed cist in the centre?

Log Text: Carburrow propped stone is a jumble of large stones c. 60 yards NW of the E Cairn on the summit of Carburrow Tor. An elongated cuboid stone points NW, propped up by a small boulder. It is a matter of speculation whether this is natural or modified by man.

Log Text: I agree with The Captain that the site could be a ruined dolmen: there are multiple large recumbent stones in the vicinity of the standing stone.

Catshole Quoit submitted by dooclay on 1st Jul 2022. The Catshole Quoit
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Catshole Quoit is loctated on the summit of Catshole Tor surrounded by multiple small tors. I wasn't entirely convinced that man was responsible for the arrangement of stones but I retain an open mind on the theory.
Hawk's Tor (South)

Hawk's Tor (South) submitted by SandyG on 29th Sep 2019. The Hawk's Tor (South) stone row, view from the east.

Log Text: I summited Hawk's Tor without any expectations. I was surprised to find these mysterious stones wedged into a crevice between rocks. Subsequently I discovered that this arrangement was considered to be a stone row.
Gamelands
Date Added: 20th Jul 2022
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Cumbria)
Visited: Yes on 1st Mar 2014. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 4

Gamelands submitted by drolaf on 15th Aug 2020. View of Gamelands from just up the hill. From here you can also still see the cairns at Raisbeck.

Log Text: This ruined stone circle has a presence greater than its physical footprint. It has no typical standing stones but the N half is well delineated as is the S Arc. The location reminded me of Drummore Stone Circle near Kirkudbright however the remains of Gamelands Stone Circle are more impressive.
Avening burial chambers
Date Added: 17th Apr 2021
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen
Country: England (Gloucestershire)
Visited: Yes on 11th Jan 2014. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 3
Avening burial chambers submitted by theCaptain on 20th Apr 2010. The entrance stones of the SE chamber.
No remains of the supposed porthole entrance can be seen, its now buried below ground level after the hillslide.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: The burial chambers have been artfully placed in the rectory garden in Avening, however, in principle I do not agree with people removing parts of an ancient monument for their own gratification. The original site is devalued and the new site is questionable at best.
Aspers Field
Date Added: 16th Apr 2021
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Cumbria)
Visited: Yes on 28th Dec 2013. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 3
Aspers Field submitted by baz on 26th Apr 2003. This stone (at NY558152) lies in the next field to the more well known Goggleby Stone (NY559151), from which I took this picture (with zoom). Both of these stones form a part of the Shap Stone Avenue.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: I have mixed feelings about the Shap stones. I am grateful for the stones that have been preserved but I regret that Shap Avenue has been effectively dismantled. I would love to have seen the avenue as it was meant to have been seen.

Log Text: It is ironic that so many antiquarians have driven past this stony cairn crossing the Ballachulish Bridge to and from Fort William, yet so few have stopped to visit it. The cairn is not particularly impressive but it has good southern views.
Achara Standing Stone
Date Added: 3rd Apr 2021
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)

Achara Standing Stone submitted by caradoc68 on 19th Jan 2012. NM 9866 5455, Achara Standing Stone. Not far from the road but can be quite difficult to see. This stone stands alone in a field and is a joy to see, has it is just over 12 feet in hight you feel quite dwarfed standing next to this huge stone.

King Arthur Stone
Date Added: 3rd Feb 2023

King Arthur Stone submitted by Maeg on 27th Aug 2012. A view of the 6th century inscribed stone at Slaughterbridge, as seen from the adjacent footpath. The script is both latin and ogham and reads "Latini [h]ic iacit fili Macari" = Latinus son of Macarus lies here. Latinus is thought to have been a local celtic chief (according to Wikipedia at least).

Log Text: King Arthur Stone lies prone on the W bank of the Camel River at SX 10916 85690. I accessed the stone from a path within the The Vale of Avalon Visitor Centre near Camelford.

Prior's Cross submitted by Thorgrim on 5th Nov 2004. Unusual Fleur de Lys symbols on both sides of this cross at the strangely named village of Washaway
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: I have driven past Washaway cross many times while visiting Cornwall. The tall slender cross has an antique weather worn patina.
