Borgarvirki

Borgarvirki submitted by KaiHofmann on 15th Apr 2010. Site in Iceland
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I was fortunate to visit Borgarvirki Fort on the cusp of Winter, a fresh layer of snow adding atmosphere to an impressive site. Although my visit predated Game of Thrones it seems to me that Borgarvirki could easily have been transported from the icy wastes beyond The Wall.

Allt nan Uamh Bone Caves

Allt nan Uamh Bone Caves submitted by freedomandpeace on 6th Feb 2014. Entrance to one of caves
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The Bone Caves are set at the base of Creag nan Uamh in a spectacular highland glen. All of the discoveries have been removed to museums so it requires some imagination to reconstruct the caves as they were discovered. The impressive nature of the site more than makes up for this.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Altnacealgach Cairn is accessible from Altnacealgach Motel if you have walking boots or wellies as it situated on a rough moorland slope. The c. 0.5 mile return trip is more than compensated by a heather clad cairn with a 45 degree arc of exposed stones in the SE.

Log Text: To find Cnoc Chaornaidh North West Cairn you require GPS navigation because the cairn is not visible from the A837. I parked up at NC 29662 08278 at a private road end c. 170 yards W of Stratheskie. Cnoc Chaornaidh North West Cairn is c. 300 yards NE across pathless rough moorland from here.

Ardvreck

Ardvreck submitted by markj99 on 8th Sep 2021. Ardvreck Chambered Cairn viewed from SE looking towards Quinag.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Ardvreck Chambered Cairn lies c. 250 yards NE of Ardvreck Castle. Therein lies the problem. Thousands of people walk past an anonymous grass mound transfixed by its more attractive companion. I myself was guilty of this on my first visit. It was only on my second visit to Ardvreck that I targeted the cairn using its grid reference.

Grey Man of the Merrick

Grey Man of the Merrick submitted by markj99 on 27th Oct 2020. Grey Man of the Merrick Close-Up
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The Grey Man of the Merrick is an unusual rock site in a valley c. 1 mile SE of the summit of Merrick, the tallest hill in the Galloway Forest. There are multiple routes available but I have walked my route twice: the path is relatively obvious for most of the route and there are good landmarks confirming accurate navigation. The Grey Man of the Merrick is located on a rockface at the top of a valley. The illusion of the bearded man requires an eastern view across the rock face looking towards Benyellary. Directions to the Grey Man are available in the main page.

Log Text: The remaining stone of Hauteville's Quoit half-buried next to a hedge requires more imagination than I have to reconstruct the monument. One for the completists.
