Log Text: I have visited the Cairnholy Cairns so often I couldn't possibly list them so I recorded my last visit. It was only recently I took more interest in the cup markings on the N Portal stone. I resolved to visit in the soft early light. My resulting photos of the cups were the best I had captured. My pictures are available in the Cairnholy 2 (Rock Art) page.

Log Text: The car park at the NE end of Elrig Loch has been closed off by a line of boulders but it is possible to park beside them. The crannog is visible as a pile of stones rising 1 foot above the water level. It is not a spectacular site but you can walk to Carlin Stone and Loch Head Cairn from here.

Log Text: Tor of Craigoch Hillfort is literally in the shadow of the Agnew Monument, a stone tower erected in the W half of the enclosure on the summit of the hill. It is easy to visit from the dedicated car park SW of the hillfort.

A view of the ravaged interior of this single-chambered Bargrennan type cairn, showing the visible remains of the chamber and passage, most of which is concealed by redeposited cairn material. Log Text: Green House Bridge Cairn is a stepping stone to Cairn Buy on moorland NE above the Rocks of the Garheugh coastal road. Both cairns are relatively intact and worth a visit.

Log Text: Cairn Macneilie (Inch Parks) is a wooded mound on the W edge of Stair Estates. It has been colonised by mature trees on its slopes and summit. Views from the cairn are now restricted by trees but they would have been extensive before afforestation.

Log Text: Bardristane 1 Carved Stone features several cup and ring carvings on its NNW face. There is a horizontal crack with grass sprouting from it one third from the top of the panel. The cup and ring carvings are featured in the portion of the panel below the crack. In normal daylight only one deep cup and ring are visible.

Log Text: Fell of Barhullion Hillfort occupies the summit of the Fell of Barhullion. The ruined fort has an original entrance on the S flank and a prominent modern cairn and OS trig point on the N flank. Canmore ID 62757 suggests there was a construction of randomly positioned vertically embedded stones on the N and E flanks known as a Cheveux de Frise. Several vertical stones survive on the N flank.

Log Text: Cairnholy 5 Carved Stone is a horizontal panel embedded in a grassy field c. 0.5 mile N of Cairnholy Farm. It is difficult to locate without accurate GPS navigation. The horizontal slab is c. 45 yards NNW of the N end of the central rocky knoll located at NX 51628 54751. There are helpful pictures and directions on the main page.

Log Text: Hillforts are one of my least favourite type of sites: it takes time and effort to investigate all the humps and hollows. Castle O'er Hillfort is no exception. I arrived at a satisfactory understanding after an hour of wandering up and down.

Log Text: It is some kind of miracle that these cup carvings were discovered in a rocky field c. 0.5 mile N of Bardristane Farm: Maarten van Hoek was systematically searching for Rock Art on Bardristane in 1993 when he found these eroded cup carvings. They are unimpressive but they exist as remnants of ancient people.

Log Text: Cairnholy 8 Carved Stone is located in the centre of a large grass field c. 0.5 mile N of Cairnholy Farm. There are only 2 small eroded. cup carvings on the flat N half of the top of the stone. Directions are included in the main page.

Log Text: Cairnholy 13 Carved Panel is located on a rock outcrop c. 10 feet from a stone wall on the W margin of a large field c. 0.5 mile N of Cairnholy farm. It is c. 130 yards SE of a natural knoll in the centre of the field. There are multiple carved panels of varying quality on this location. Cairnholy 4,11-15 Carved Panels are all listed separately on TMP.

Log Text: Cairnholy 15 Carved Panel is probably the the least impressive of all the panels on this rocky outcrop, however an eroded cup and ring marking and a shallow cup carving obscured by white lichen can be found on panel, c. 6 feet SE of Cairnholy 13 at the SE foot of the knoll.
