Log Text: Finnarts Hill Cairn is a verdant isle in a sea of heather with a fine view of Loch Ryan to the West. The large capstone in the centre of the cairn is an impressive remnant.

Log Text: Finnarts Hill Enclosure is located in heather moorland on the summit of Finnarts Hill. Reeds have largely obscured the ditch surrounding the enclosure and the irregular surface of the cairn is covered in grass tussocks. As with nearby Finnarts Hill Cairn, the W view of Loch Ryan is its most impressive aspect.

Log Text: Culquhasen Cairn is located behind Culquhasen Cottages in a field with several gorse-covered mounds. You would walk past it if you weren’t looking for it.

Log Text: The site of Chalybeate Well (Dalry) is easy to access via the Southern Upland Way. A moorland stream runs through NX6488792815. I used my GPS to search a grid around the given NGR. There was no obvious well in the vicinity.

Log Text: The tree-felling has made this an easier site to visit. There are extensive views from the fort and the remains of the broch are impressive.

Log Text: The half mile trek to this cairn was waterlogged but I was compensated for my efforts by being 150 yards from a red deer stag and hinds (slightly nerve-wracking) and finding a cairn in moorland. It isn't the biggest cairn ever, but the overall experience was ultimately worthwhile.

Log Text: After a 250 yards trudge through moorland, at least Diddles Hill Cairn has visible stones on the central mound and a large potential kerbstone. These features are best viewed from the W. GPS and wellies essential.

Log Text: Balchriston Dun is a hidden gem. It isn't visible until you are at close quarters in a deep glen. Access to Balchriston Dun is via the N flank.

Log Text: Given its proximity to Barlure farm, this cairn is surprisingly free of debris. It's an easy walk from the Barrhill road so why not?

Log Text: Barnshangan E Cairn is an unusually stony cairn, given its location on farmland. There has been extensive quarrying on the N half, but the S half has a good covering of stones.

Log Text: I spotted Gowk Nest Wood Cairn on OS Aerial view however it is more difficult to see in situ. The low mound can be best observed on close approach. The site is not spectacular, but it is only a short detour from Mains of Larg Cairns.

Log Text: Mains of Larg NE Cairn is accessed from a lay-by c. 50 yards N of New Luce Viaduct. A short trip across fields, rough pasture and marsh leads to a group of three cairns. Wellies are required for all but dry Summer visits.

Log Text: This was my third visit to Cairn MacNeillie, however, it was my first visit in Winter when the vegetation has died down. There are pigs wandering around this cairn adjacent to Cruise farm.

Log Text: Cruise W Cairn is difficult to discern in its environment. It is a 2 feet high grassy mound in a marshy field containing Smithy Hill. It is probably best viewed close up.

Log Text: Cairn Back Fell Fort can't be seen from the New Luce road. The knoll is a feature viewable from the Southern Upland Way. The fort is a hidden gem, rarely visited by antiquarians.

Log Text: St Katherine's Well (Glenluce) survives as a pool of water on the edge of the New Luce road opposite Glenluce Abbey. The stone dome is covered in briars and ivy.
