On a flatter shelf of land on the eastern side of Cosdon Hill are the splendid remains of a cairn and treble stone row.
The remains of the cairn at the uphill end of the rows is approx 8 metres in diameter, and has been substantially messed about with. Despite this, there are the clear remains of a double cist in the centre of the cairn, the downhill one of which still has its capstone largely in place. Several stones also remain in place...

Log Text: It is quite a steep walk up Cosdon Hill to this outstanding triple stone row. The stones are not very tall but this impressive monument is well worth a visit. The cairn at the W end is ruined but there are remains of a double cist in the centre.

The three parallel rows run off down the hillside from the cairn in an easterly direction, for a distance of at least 140 metres. Each of the rows has a large slab placed across the rows at its end by the cairn. The rows are not straight, and curve slightly south and then to the north down the hill.
A smashing place to while away some time.

Log Text: The small stones which largely make up Burford Down Stone Row are not visually impressive but the length of the stone row is extensive. It was interesting to investigate gaps in the row for buried stones.

Log Text: Burford Down Cairn Circle is partially hidden by gorse but the two upright kerb stones identified it as an ancient site. In the middle of the cairn there is an open chamber with one lining stone remaining.

Log Text: It nice to find a site that you don't have to walk 3 miles over moorland to visit.
The Galloway Stone is just such a site. Simply leave the M6 at Shap, turn L for Orton, then take the R turn to Salterwath just before the M6 underpass.
The Galloway Stone lies c. 50 yards to the L after 150 yards along this lane.
It looks like a large chunk of Shap Pink Granite so it can't be an erratic from Galloway.
The explanation for it's name may be that it was a marker on the Old Scotch Drove Road for turning onto the Galwaithegate or Galloway Road.
As an additional point of interest there is an Ordnance Survey Bench Mark Bolt on The Galloway Stone denoting a height of 98.8m.

Log Text: Doon Castle Broch is my favourite local site to visit. The name may be confusing to some people because there is a Doon Castle in Ayrshire on Loch Doon. Doon Castle Broch is on Ardwell Point in Dumfries and Galloway.
A site of this quality deserves more visitors however the isolated location discourages people. There is the problem of the rocky road after West Ardwell Farm however it just requires careful driving on a short stretch to reach the Ardwell Bay car park. There is a sandy beach for non-antiquarians to amuse themselves while TMAers visit Doon Castle.

Log Text: I am always amazed that anyone should deliberately chose to build a dry stane dyke directly across an ancient site. To rub salt into the wounds, Bardennoch Cairn probably provided the raw materials for the dyke's constuction. That said, it is a worthwhile visit especially if you continue on to the Braidenoch Cross Slabs.

Log Text: I have visited Sheuchan's Cairn twice. The first visit was on 20.06.12. The cairn was hidden in forestry, difficult to find. The cairn was carpeted in moss with an excavated chamber in the centre. The surrounding trees elevated the atmosphere of site, isolating it from the outside world. The return visit was on 19.09.20. The cairn was still hard to find, without a GPS almost impossible. The trees had been felled and the cairn was a clear spot in the devastation that tree felling leaves behind. Access to the cairn from the road was over water filled ditches and random debris. Sheuchan's Cairn was unaltered but now it was open to the elements on a scarred hillside. The peaceful ambience had been shattered. Thankfully the thick carpet of moss remains, helping to protect the exposed cairn.

Log Text: It is possible to visit Cairn Avel, a well preserved large cairn, if you go straight on at the point where Carnavel Farm paddock joins the path up the hill. Cairn Avel lies c. 300 yards E across boggy ground. Follow the drier margin round the field to avoid the bog. The walk up to the cross slabs is relatively steep but you are rewarded by two bonus cairns and scenic views.

This relatively untouched horned long cairn lies in the woods north of Newton Stewart. This photo shows the two portal stones with the cairn heaped behind them.

Log Text: Boreland Cairn features on a path round Knockman Wood located to the N of Minigaff. Despite its relative isolation the cairn was being robbed until 1882 when it was protected. The cairn is best visited in Spring or Autumn to avoid the ferns.

Log Text: Directions to Court Cairn (The May): Take the A747 Port William turn off the A75 at Glenluce. Stay on the A747 for c. 6.6 miles to an unsigned left turn onto the B7005 at NX 27136 49953. Travel on the B7005 for c. 2.2 miles to reach a minor road signed for Kirkcowan. Court Cairn (The May) is 0.4 miles on the left at The May farm. There is room to park in a gateway adjacent to the field.

Log Text: Hardcroft Cairn is easiest accessed from the Southern Upland Way. It is c. 600 yards W of the SUW junction with the Caves of Kilhern path. If you haven't visited the Caves of Kilhern it is an essential detour.
