Crucuno cromlech

Crucuno cromlech submitted by thecaptain on 21st Dec 2007. There are 22 remaining stones, on average 2 metres in height, arranged in a rectangle measuring about 33 metres by 25 metres.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I struggle with the concept of rectangular "Stone Circles". I am conditioned to expect rectangular structures to be modern and stone circles to be ancient. I had the same problem with Quadlatiere du Manio. I left Cromlech de Crucuno with more questions than answers.

Crucuno Dolmen

Date Added: 24th Aug 2025

Crucuno dolmen

Crucuno dolmen submitted by thecaptain on 22nd Dec 2007. View of the southern side of this massive dolmen, showing clearly its proximity to the farmhouse. On the right are the last remaining capstone and pair of stones from the long entrance passageway.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Dolmen de Crucuno is very easy to visit. It is situated adjacent to a house in the centre of Crucuno, a hamlet between Plouharnel and Erdeven. These facts don't make Dolmen de Crucuno any less impressive when you are standing beside it. A giant capstone measuring c. 7.5m long and weighing an estimated 40 tons is supported by 9 large orthostats.

Take the Crucuno turn off the D781 at the Toul Siac'h roundabout. After c. 0.8km turn right into a car park in the centre of the village opposite the dolmen.

Log Text: When I visited Cullernie Ring Cairn the field was in grass. I parked carefully in the wide junction of the A96 with Lower Cullernie Farm. There is a gate opposite the junction. This enabled me to walk safely along the margin of the field back to Cullernie Ring Cairn. It is not well preserved but it is still worth a visit if the field is not in crop.

Culquhasen-SE submitted by markj99 on 11th Oct 2024. Culquhasen SE Cairn viewed from S.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The walk to Culquhasen SE Cairn is not straightforward. This route involves a walk of 0.25 miles along the A747 Port William road. Care should be taken: cars tend to drive fast around a sharp corner. The cross country route is an assault course: It includes crossing 3 dry stane dykes and a burn but no electric fences fortunately. Wellies are essential for this walk due to the burn crossing. My route is viewable on Culquhasen SE.

Follow a track NE towards Cults Loch. The Central Crannog can be viewed from the W bank of the loch. The NW Crannog is located on a circular promontory in the NW corner of the loch. My route is viewable on Cults Loch Crannogs. On a cautionary note, there are often beef cattle in the field beside Cults Loch.

Site Type: Stone Circle Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 21st Mar 2012

Dalcross Mains

Dalcross Mains submitted by madmark23 on 23rd Oct 2015. A Professor comes and speaks to this cairn once a year.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: If you are visiting the Clava Cairns at Balnuaran it is a short detour to Dalcross Mains Clava Cairn. This unrestored site is an interesting contrast to the restored cairns. It has been subjected to extensive stone removal leaving a semi-circle of kerb stones on a grassy knoll with trees round the perimeter.

Dalginross

Luckily , in this instance there are 2 lay-by's at the junction of a minor road signed for Balloch with the A822 heading S out of Crieff at NN 8580 2012. Walk across the A822 to a gate into a field. Dargill Standing Stone is located c. 110 yards SE of the gate.

Deepdale Stones

Deepdale Stones submitted by TimPrevett on 22nd Jun 2006. The surviving Deepdale stone, looking over Stenness Loch, in the direction of Brodgar, Stenness, and Maeshowe. Unstan tomb is just behind the stone on the first spur of land. This stone is about 6 feet high, but narrower than my hand.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Deepdale Standing Stone is located c. 70 yards NE of the A965 with a distant view of the Ring of Brodgar, Stones of Stenness and Maeshowe. The erect slab is not spectacular but worth a short walk for the sea view. A second stone is marked on OS Mapping but it has been removed.
