Barsloisnoch

Barsloisnoch submitted by caradoc68 on 30th Apr 2012. There are two kists here within 20-50 feet of each other but can be easily missed. Canmore site page.

Log Text: Barsloisnoch cists are only to be found by those looking for them. They lie in marshy pasture land adjacent to Barsloisloch Farm. Barsloisnoch SE cist has an impressive capstone, well worth a small detour while visiting the Kilmartin sites.

Kilchoan

Kilchoan

Kilchoan submitted by mickm on 14th Apr 2005. Detail of the top of the chamber looking towards the entrance at the NE showing the displaced capstone over a lintel covering the central compartment. The side slabs of the front compartment are visible beyond.

Log Text: Kilchoan Chambered Cairn is located c. 150 yards NW of Kilchoan Lodge. On my visit there was a herd of bullock around the cairn, churning the grass to mud. The jumble of large stones become a large passage and chamber with time and imagination. The site is off the beaten track but more than rewards the expenditure of energy.

Carn Ban (Lochgilphead)

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Carn Ban (Lochgilphead) is a grassy mound on the S bank of the Crinan Canal on the E end of Cairnbaan. It is accessed via a forest track into Knapdale Forest which starts c. 75 yards W of the swing bridge in Cairnbaan. The cairn is unspectacular save for a large moss covered capstone on an exposed cist.

Balnacraig Cairn Barra

Visited: Yes on 28th Jun 2011. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4

Balnacraig Cairn Barra

Balnacraig Cairn Barra submitted by markj99 on 7th Oct 2020. Balnacraig Cairn cist looking W to Borve in the background.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Balnacraig Cairn is on Barra, an idyllic small island in the Outer Hebrides. Balnacraig is a ruined chambered cairn on a knoll at the foot of Grianan, a substantial hill. Balnacraig Cairn has been extensively robbed leaving all but a scatter of stones and a collapsed chamber formed by large stones. The location is perhaps more impressive than the cairn itself.
A better preserved cairn Dun Bharpa can be found c. 0.5 mile NNW. I found it convenient to visit both cairns in the same trip.

Log Text: Borve Standing Stones are close to a beach track at the small community of Borve. Dun Bharpa is accessed via Borve, a worthwhile detour up to a large almost intact cairn.

I found that I understood more details of the sites on my revisit. South Yarrows Archaeological Trail is thoroughly recommended!
