Log Text: I spent a pleasant afternoon wandering Trehudreth Downs. I was successfully searching for cairns but also stumbled on this short stone row running WSW-ENE. The stones were low lying and difficult to locate in rough moorland. Upon consulting my GPS I noted that this was the W end of a long stone row. At the time I couldn't locate its remaining portion. The Stone Rows of Great Britain includes Trehudreth Down. Stone 19 (SX 12464 72955) and Stone 13 (SX 12499 72967) gives the full range of the stones I found.

Log Text: The Greenbarrow Barrows can easily be visited en route to Trehudreth Downs. The SE Barrow is the most impressive monument. Despite a GPS search I couldn't locate the third barrow.

Log Text: Walk 40 yards E towards a gorse bush from Trehudreth Downs West Cairn. There is a standing stone measuring c. 62 inches high, leaning c. 25° E. There are 2 similar stones lying E of the standing stone. They may be remnants of a stone row leading to Trehudreth Downs West Cairn.

Log Text: I parked at the Temple/A30 Junction to visit Trehudtreth Downs via Greenbarrow Downs. There are multiple sites to visit in this area. Trehudreth Downs C Stone Setting is located c. 40 yards E of Trehudreth Downs W Cairn. The stone is obscured by a gorse bush as viewed from the cairn. The three stone appear to form a shallow arc. It is an intriguing site prompting more questions than answers.

Log Text: The desirability of an antiquity is proportional to the difficulty in reaching it. I seem to follow this principle in my expeditions. By that measure Stonehenge is not worth the effort but Long Tom (Cairnryan) is a must visit. This may seem like twisted logic however millions of people have visited Stonehenge and maybe 10 people have actively searched for Long Tom (Cairnryan). PS I have also visited Stonehenge.

Log Text: The route to Cairnwhapple Stone is mainly on a forest track with the last 150 yards through the forest so a GPS device is necessary to locate this stone. My route can be seen on Cairnwhapple Stone.

Log Text: There is a farm track for the first 0.5 mile followed by 0.25 mile along an undulating ridge to Kildoon Fort. There are extensive views in all directions from the fort.

Log Text: Stranraer Museum tells the story of Galloway from 7000 BC when people started settling on the coast to the present day. There are stone and bronze axes from all over Galloway and Christian Stones dating from the 5th Century. There are also agricultural and industrial exhibits and a section dedicated to the noted Polar explorer Sir John Ross who was born in Galloway.

Log Text: I discovered this carved rock by observing an unusually large carved cup on a stone adjacent to the SUW on the edge of Knockcraven Wood. The smooth sides and depth of the cup carving are possibly caused by a natural depression on the surface used for grinding. The bonus discovery of a smooth groove probably used for scraping increases the evidence for domestic activity.

Log Text: The Cunningham Stone is easily visited from Cunninghame Farm road, lying adjacent to a gateway. It is close to some cattle feeders so the area surrounding it may be muddy.

Log Text: There is such a wealth of ancient sites on Drennandow Moor, however The Thieves Standing Stone are the best site to my eyes. I feel a magnetic attraction to Standing Stones generally so a pair of six footers are irresistible.

Log Text: Cairnharrow is c. 3 miles E of Creetown. Creetown Summit Cairn is easily visited via Cambret Hill. Take the R turn 100 yards before the Gem Rock Museum in Creetown signposted for Glenquicken Farm Trout Fishery. After c. 2.5 miles there is a lay-by opposite Glenquicken Stone Circle on the R side. Continue E for c. 1.1 miles to the access track to Cambret Hill mast. There is a lay-by at NX 52645 57987 0.5 miles up the track, just below the Cambret Hill mast. I have plotted a 1.25 mile route S to Cairnharrow Summit Cairn via 3 Cairns, 1 Stone Circle, 1 Cup and Ring Marked Stone and 1 Modern Worked Stone on my OS Mapping Routes (go to main page).

Log Text: I found Cambret Moor Cairn by walking to the OS Grid Reference. It is almost invisible in rough moorland. The exposed cist was visible in a central circle confirming the description in Canmore. It is c. 100 yards N of Cambret Moor Worked Stone (Canmore ID 63681) and The Penny Stone (Canmore ID 63679).The cairn is on my OS Route for Cairnharrow Summit Cairn.

Log Text: There is a significant concentration of ancient sites in Cambret Moor valley probably indicating its importance to the creators of the monuments. It must have been a spectacular vista in its original state. The sites are visited in a linear N-S route from Cambret Hill. The order of the route is Cambret Moor Cairn, Cambret Moor Worked Stone, The Penny Stone, Cauldside Burn N Cairn, Cauldside Burn Stone Setting, Cauldside Burn S Cairn, Cauldside Burn Stone Circle and Cairnharrow Summit Cairn. It is a c. 3 mile return route with c. 400m ascent over rough moorland. Good walking boots and GPS Navigation are required.

Cauldside Burn Cairn South submitted by rogerkread on 1st May 2013. The thick mist began to clear just as I arrived at the cairn - invisible until 50 yards from it, which may be difficult to believe. Looking towards Cambret Hill from the top of the cairn, the largest of the visible flat stones near its base has an excellent large cup and rings. Climbing the wall/barbed wire fence between hill and cairn is the only problem!

Log Text: Caulside Burn Cairn South Cairn is located in the valley between Cambret Hill & Cairnharrow. The substantial stone mound measures c. 60 feet in diameter and 10 feet high. There is an exposed cist in a hollow on the summit of the mound. It measures c. 3 feet E-W and 2 feet transversely.

Log Text: Cauldside Burn Stone Circle is located immediately S of Cauldside Burn S Cairn. Most of the stones are small and partially hidden by moor grass. The sole exception is a slab measuring c. 4 feet high and 3 feet broad on the SSW of the circle. I was able to locate 9 other stones round the perimeter of the circle, varying from 6 inches to 2 feet high.

Log Text: West Cairngaan Stone has been given a spring clean since my last visit in 2011. All of the field clearance stones have been removed leaving West Cairngaan Stone high and dry on a E-W rocky earth plinth. It is visible from the West Tarbet Path which starts at West Cairngaan Farm. Follow the path E then turn S to reach a gate at NX 13093 31346. West Cairngaan Stone is located in an arable field c. 200 yards E of the gateway.
