Lang Stane o' Craigearn submitted by cosmic on 7th Mar 2004. Lang Stane o' Craigearn is at NJ723149. It is a very tall thin standing stone - at least 10 feet high. It is situated on top of a grassed mound behind a house.

Log Text: Given its chequered history I was unsure about visiting Strichen House Stone Circle. I was pleasantly surprised by the gravitas of this small stone circle.

Log Text: It is difficult to access Candle Hill Stone Circle: It is protected by an enclosure and vigorous shrubs. It is best to enter the enclosure on the SE corner adjacent to the remains of the circle. The circle is located c. 30 yards ESE of the centre of the knoll. The most obvious feature is the Candle Stone, a standing stone c. 15 feet W of a thorn tree. A grassy cairn is situated c. 6 feet S in the centre of the circle. Walk S round the cairn to reach the fallen recumbent stone and flankers on the S Arc of the circle. It is possible to find the fallen N,ENE,W and NW stones by walking round the perimeter of the circle, starting from the NNE Standing Stone. The N,ENE,W are largely buried in the turf with only a small area visible from above. The NW stone is hidden in gorse on the NW Arc.

Log Text: Ardestie Souterrain is easy to visit but it is a little over-restored and airy for my taste. I prefer a more subterranean experience in keeping with the original site.

Log Text: There are some sites which are overwhelming. There is too much to see on just one visit. The wealth of rock art on display at Achnabreck almost requires a revisit to appreciate how special it is.

Log Text: Antiquarians are spoiled for choice in Kilmartin. Ballymeanoch complex is a worthwhile visit consisting of a kerb cairn, stone row, a stone pair and a henge. It requires some time and exploration to make sense of the complex. The concentration of sites in a small area implies that Ballymeanoch was important to the ancient people.

Ballymeanoch Kerb Cairn submitted by caradoc68 on 11th Dec 2011. NR 83395 96429, Kerb cairn, Ballymean. Kilmartin Glen is a very interesting area in Argyll rich in Archaeology. This Kerb cairn in know exception, being on private land the farmer has kindly fenced it off with pubic access to severely Neolithic/Bronze age features in this field.

Log Text: Even in Kilmartin Glen where one is spoiled for choice Baluachcraig Cup and Ring Marked panels are worth a visit. Easy parking plus a short walk to an ancient site rich in Rock Art: It's a no brainer!

Log Text: Salachary Stone Row is c. 3 miles N of Kilmartin in open moorland. The three stone row consists of a standing stone, a leaning stone and an embedded recumbent stone on a N-S Axis measuring c. 15 feet.
Travel c. 5 miles N to a lay-by at an abandoned quarry on the L at NM 8420 0450. Walk W along the road for c. 150 yards to a grass track on the L. Follow this track S for c. 0.5 mile. It ends at NM 83981 04031. Salachary Stone Row is c. 80 yards E of this point.
The remote location of this stone row amplifies the ambience of the site making it an enjoyable experience.

Nether Largie standing stone submitted by caradoc68 on 18th Aug 2012. This standing stone is in the middle of a field, a short distance of the footpath. The farmer does not like you being there and might put a angry looking bull in the field to put visitors off. Cant find a lot written about this stone or why it seems to be leaning at 45 degrees and pointing to the southeast.

The nine foot central stone is accompanied by a number of smaller stones surrounding it. The central stone also has several cup marks.

There are several inserted into earlier monuments near to here, apart from this, showing these sites continued to have significance over a long period of time.

Log Text: Nether Largie Mid Cairn is the least impressive of the group. It has been extensively robbed leaving a cist and large capstone exposed in the S Arc of the cairn.

Log Text: Nether Largie North Cairn looks to be intact from a distance. Reality bites when the metal hatch on the summit comes into view. The central chamber and cist have been over restored.

Ri Cruin submitted by caradoc68 on 23rd Feb 2012. This lovely cairn dates from the Bronze Age and is pretty new when it comes to the Kilmartin landscape. Hidden away in some trees just of the beaten track with its two kist's, this Cairn has a lot to offer with its large Kist's and its rock art of axeheads and possibly a caving of a boat in one of these kists !!.

Log Text: Ri Cruin Cruin is notable for two large exposed cists on the N & S Arcs of the cairn. I wasn't aware of the difficult to spot axehead carvings in the S cist at the time of my visit.
