Log Text: I followed directions to Dolmen de Mané Rutuel from the Tourist Office in Locmariaquer. After a 5 minute walk, I discovered that the long mound is closed to the public due to safety concerns. I was reduced to walking round a protective fence, making the best of limited views. Mané Rutuel is an impressive monument but a disappointing outcome.
Mané-er-Hroëck tumulus
Date Added: 25th Sep 2023
Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: France (Bretagne:Morbihan (56))

Mané-er-Hroëck tumulus submitted by greywether on 30th Jun 2005. The modern entrance to this underground chamber.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Mané-er-Hroëck tumulus is easily visited via a signed footpath on Rue de Kerpenhir. The chamber entrance is obviously modern but that doesn't detract from the atmosphere in the plain chamber in the centre of the tumulus.

Log Text: In the centre of Trinité-sur-Mer take the D781 Locmariaquer exit off the Alain Barriere Roundabout. After c. 50m bear left onto Rue de Kerisper. Follow this road for c. 150m to reach a private residential lane on the left. Park up as close as possible. Walk c. 150m up the lane to Allée couverte de Mané Roullarde on the right. Log Text: I found Dolmen de Kervilor Mané-Bras by accident while looking for Dolmen de Kermarquer. I saw a wooden sign at 47.597594, -3.036248 on the roadside and followed the path through a wood for c. 200m to reach a large mound in a clearing.

Log Text: Maison des Megalithes is free to enter. Information on the Carnac Alignments is available. There is a short film running in a loop with English commentary available and displays illustrating the Carnac Alignments. It is both a good preparation and a good starting point for the enigmatic Carnac Alignments.
It is possible to take the Petit Train or several other Carnac alignment tours located on the approach to the Maison des Megalithes. Parking at the Maison des Megalithes is free.

Mains of Larg cairn submitted by PaulM on 30th Oct 2002. Mains of Larg cairn
An easily visible cairn near the Mains of Larg Farm at NX166639. Not anything special - just easy to see and typical of many of the cairns in the area.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: This cairn is classified under Milton of Larg on Canmore. It is easy to park in an adjacent gateway to visit the cairn, provided there are no beef cattle in the field. It would have been wonderful if the cairn was better preserved, however Milton of Larg cairn is still worth a visit.

Culroy Cairn 1 submitted by andy_h on 14th Aug 2006. Nearest cairn to the single track road. One of five cairns.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: The Machermore cairn should be called Culroy Cairn as it is on Culroy farmland. A Canmore search for Culroy will find these cairns.
The cairn is almost perfectly preserved except for some exposed stones on the E flank. It's location in a flat field elevates this cairn into my top 10.
I found the cairn to the E, however it is covered by whins and in a poor condition.
Culroy White Cairn lies 100 yards of the Y junction at Culroy farm around 1/2 mile up the road.
I have plans to revisit to sort out the remaining cairns. Canmore's 1911 visit seems to have been over enthusiastic in it's cairn nominations.
Lyonston Stone

Log Text: I took the opportunity to revisit Lyonston Stone while travelling through Maybole. I normally take the Maybole bypass to and from Ayr. Take the Kirkmichael Road at the E edge of Maybole. After a quarter of a mile there lay-by on the right side of the road. Walk 25 yards back towards Maybole to the iron stile into the field on your right. Follow the wall for 75 yards to the iron stile at which point you can see the stone left of you in the next field.

Log Text: Head for Fortingall. Cross the Lyon Bridge c. 0.5 miles W of Fortingall. There is a large passing place c. 300 yards later on the R with room to park up. Walk back c. 100 yards to a gateway. Walk c. 200 yards ESE across the field to see Lyon Bridge Cairn, a small dimple in a flat field. The recumbent stone on the NE edge of the cairn has multiple cup marks. It looks out of place on a small ring cairn. Its original purpose is uncertain.
Lower Camster Stones

Lower Camster Stones submitted by steveco on 24th Feb 2002. Camster Stone Circle ND260459. Remains of Lower Camster Stone Circle.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Lower Camster Standing Stone are a curious contrast to the Grey Cairns of Camster located c. 1 mile N of the Cairns in flat moorland. The N and S Standing Stones are now dwarfed by Wind Turbines but they still retain a sense of antiquity. The W stone which is adjacent to the road is somewhat less convincing.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: Low Airyolland Cairn is easily visited by following the Southern Upland Way S of Cruise Farm. The biggest problem is parking: It is not possible to park at Cruise Farm and the grass verge opposite the gate is soft. I chose to park at the first available lay-by c. 0.25 miles S of the gate.

Log Text: This remnant of an ancient monument has at least been saved, however it is a sad reminder of Man's lack of respect for ancient stones.
