Log Text: Castlerigg Stone Circle has four positive points.

1) Location, Location Location: it has the best views of any stone circle I have visited. The views of Skiddaw & Blencathra are awesome.
2) The stone circle is almost intact and the stones are reasonably large.
3) The remains of The Sanctuary add a mysterious dimension to the site.
4) The site is well maintained, free from vegetation.

The only negative point is it's popularity: it is unusual to get some time alone with the stones.

Garleffin

Garleffin submitted by markj99 on 21st Jun 2019. Garleffin Stone in front garden.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Canmore ID 60935 relates the sadly familiar tale of a megalithic site destroyed by modern farming. Only 2 of the original stones remain in the garden of a bungalow called Druidslea, probably named after the stones. The standing stone in the front garden is allegedly in its original position but the second standing stone was moved to the back garden in 1991. Garleffin stones are like caged tigers in a zoo: they shouldn't be subjected to such indignity.

Log Text: Music Water Standing Stone can be seen from the road for St Eval. It is easy to park and visit via a convenient gateway. The tall irregular stone is good value for energy expended.

Four Parishes Rock

Date Added: 31st Mar 2023
Site Type: Sculptured Stone Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 15th Oct 2012. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 3

Four Parishes Rock

Four Parishes Rock submitted by Bladup on 4th Dec 2017. Four Parishes Rock, I believe the right hand side of this stone is a slightly different colour because it was once in the ground (for a long time), therefore making this a former Standing Stone. The weathering at the other end (left) is also going in the right direction if made when stood up. Ding Dong mine is visible on the right.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The Four Parishes Rock is obviously a recumbent standing with two crosses and indecipherable script inscribed on the stone. It is located at a crossroads in an area rich in megalithic remains. Worth a look in passing.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Take the turn onto Dan-Y-Coed, a residential dead-end street on the S edge of Pontsticill. There is room to park at the end of the cul-de-sac. Follow a grass track N for c. 200 yards to reach a sheepfold. Walk NW for c. 300 yards to a small stone covered cairn, Bryn Glas III. Walk c. 30 yards N to Bryn Glas IV, then c. 85 yards N to Pontsticill Ring Cairn and its small satellite cairn Bryn Glas V. My route is viewable on Pontsticill Cairns.
The Bryn Glas cairns are difficult to locate in open moorland due to their low stature. GPS navigation would be advantageous.

Warrior's Rest

Warrior's Rest submitted by Anne T on 29th Jun 2015. A close up of the Warrior's Rest east face, but no cup marks that I can see. I wonder if the report of these cups got muddled with the Glebe Stone, just down the road, as I could see two cups on its eastern face.

Log Text: Warrior's Rest Standing Stone is a yard away from the gable end of Warrior's Rest Cottage. The cottage was unoccupied when I visited so there was no-one to ask permission.

Log Text: The Hurlers S Stone Circle requires a lot of imagination to reconstruct the original circle in your mind. It is in the shadow of it's more impressive neighbours. One for the antiquarians.

The Hurlers Pipers

The Hurlers Pipers submitted by JimChampion on 24th Aug 2007. View through the 'goalposts' of the Pipers, neatly framing Stowe's Hill in the distance (home of the Cheesewring natural rock feature and the neolithic enclosure of Stowe's Pound). These two stones stand to the west of the Hurlers stone circles. The dung in the foreground is from the ponies that graze the moor.

Log Text: These standing stones would be the star attraction if the Hurlers Stone Circles were not several hundred yards away. As it is this pair of stone have a strong gravitas.

Castallack Carn submitted by hamish on 2nd Jul 2005. This is an interesting feature, maybe it was from places like this that Cap Stones were taken.there is a small cave here. This is not far from the footpath.

Log Text: More than 10 years have elapsed since my visit to Castallack Carn Standing Stone. It is located at SW 44740 25374, between Castallack Round and an abandoned quarry. GPS navigation and persistence are required to find this stone hidden in shrubbery.

Blind Fiddler submitted by stu on 20th Aug 2002. SW427282. the top of this large stone can be seen above the hedge on the A30, several stiles on roadside to get you into the field.

Log Text: The Blind Fiddler Standing Stone is a rare exception in Cornish sites: a massive standing stone accessible via a short path with dedicated parking. Perhaps only Men Gurta is taller and more impressive than the Blind Fiddler.

The Table Stone of Castallack

Date Added: 16th Jun 2025
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 19th Mar 2013. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 4

The Table Stone of Castallack

The Table Stone of Castallack submitted by Bladup on 9th Feb 2023. The Table Stone of Castallack, was it it's own standing stone, part of the standing stone in the next field to the west or part of a possible cairn in the next field to the south or even something else?
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I found this recumbent stone when visiting the nearby standing stone but was unsure of its antiquity. It looks like a naked capstone but there are no other stones in the vicinity and the ground is flat. I think the stone is too heavy to be moved so it is probably in its original position.

Boskenna Cross

Date Added: 30th May 2021

Boskenna Cross

Boskenna Cross submitted by enkidu41 on 15th Nov 2004. The shot shows the principal face of the cross with its depiction of Christ. The three-part base is out of all proportion to the cross. The look of stability is deceptive given its three damaging brushed with modern traffic!

Log Text: I parked in the lay-by adjacent to Boskenna Cross for the path to Boscawen-Ros E.
