A view of the ravaged interior of this single-chambered Bargrennan type cairn, showing the visible remains of the chamber and passage, most of which is concealed by redeposited cairn material. The chamber is aligned west to east with the passage entered from the east. There was a peristalith of closely spaced stones around the cairn, a few of which remain visible on the northeast side. Log Text: Cairn Kenny is located in isolated moorland c. 2 miles from the nearest road: it is doubtful that it was worth the trouble to visit a ruined cairn.

Log Text: Cairn Macneilie (Inch Parks) is a wooded mound on the W edge of Stair Estates. It has been colonised by mature trees on its slopes and summit. Views from the cairn are now restricted by trees but they would have been extensive before afforestation.

Log Text: This was my third visit to Cairn MacNeillie, however, it was my first visit in Winter when the vegetation has died down. There are pigs wandering around this cairn adjacent to Cruise farm.

Log Text: Cairn na Gath Long Cairn is visible on the right of the Southern Upland Way having passed N through Balmurrie Farm. Cairn Na Gath is closest to the SUW at NX 20916 67493, c. 0.67 miles N of Balmurrie. From this point Cairn na Gath is c. 400 yards E.

Log Text: A concrete road heading N off the A77 between Lochans and Portpatrick gives access to Cairn Pat Hill Fort. The modern antenna dominates Cairn Pat hill. There is a panoramic 360° view from the summit.

Log Text: The route to Cairn Wood (Barskeoch) follows the old military road from Blackpark farm c. 1 mile W of Newton Stewart. There is space for a car to park at the junction with the A75. The final approach follows a track through fields to a cairn hidden in a wood. My route can be viewed on Cairn Wood (Barskeoch).

Log Text: On my return visit I found Cairnderry in an improved condition: The kerb of the cairn was discernible and the exposed chambers in the centre of the cairn were free from vegetation. I was able to reconcile the remains of the cairn with the plan.
Cairnderry Cairn is an impressive monument with easy access from the A714, deserving of more visitors.

Log Text: Cairnennock Cairn is a relatively well preserved white cairn in moorland above Loch Muck in East Ayrshire. It is possible to park just N of Eriff Farm. A path leads through the farm round Loch Muck. When you reach a sheepfold head W up the moorland. After c 150 yards you will see the marker cairn on the horizon.

The Cairnerzean Cairns are within 100 yards S of the lay-by. It is better to visit in Autumn or Winter when the bracken has died off revealing the true footprints of the cairns.

Log Text: Cairnerzean Fell Central Cairn is one of the Cairnerzean Fell Cairn Group on open moorland. The cairns vary in states of preservation from entirely robbed out to relatively intact. Cairnerzean Fell Central Cairn has been extensively robbed leaving a c. 4 feet high crescent of stones in the NE Arc of the original cairn. The remainder of the cairn has disappeared into a circle of boggy moorland.

Log Text: Cairnerzean Fell N Cairn is one of the Cairnerzean Fell Cairn Group on open moorland. The cairns vary in states of preservation from entirely robbed out to relatively intact. Cairnerzean Fell N Cairn is the best preserved of the group with an intact central mound. The stone kerb is intact round the perimeter but stone robbing has left a void between the kerb and the central mound.

Log Text: Cairnerzean Fell S Cairn is one of the Cairnerzean Fell Cairn Group on open moorland. The cairns vary in states of preservation from entirely robbed out to relatively intact. Cairnerzean Fell S Cairn is the most speculative of the group. There is a grassy circular footprint c. 20 yards across in rough moorland but all the stones have been removed. There is a natural rocky knoll in the centre of the cairn.

Log Text: Cairnharrow is c. 3 miles E of Creetown. Creetown Summit Cairn is easily visited via Cambret Hill. Take the R turn 100 yards before the Gem Rock Museum in Creetown signposted for Glenquicken Farm Trout Fishery. After c. 2.5 miles there is a lay-by opposite Glenquicken Stone Circle on the R side. Continue E for c. 1.1 miles to the access track to Cambret Hill mast. There is a lay-by at NX 52645 57987 0.5 miles up the track, just below the Cambret Hill mast. I have plotted a 1.25 mile route S to Cairnharrow Summit Cairn via 3 Cairns, 1 Stone Circle, 1 Cup and Ring Marked Stone and 1 Modern Worked Stone on my OS Mapping Routes (go to main page).

Log Text: I have visited the Cairnholy Cairns so often I couldn't possibly list them so I recorded my last visit. It was only recently I took more interest in the cup markings on the N Portal stone. I resolved to visit in the soft early light. My resulting photos of the cups were the best I had captured. My pictures are available in Cairnholy 2 (Rock Art) page on TMP.

Log Text: Cairnholy 11 Carved Panel is located in the NW corner of a rocky knoll on the W margin of a large field c. 0.5 miles N of Cairnholy Farm. It is c. 6 feet E of the stone wall marking the field boundary. 8 small cup markings are geometrically arranged in 2 parallel lines of 4 equally spaced cups are carved in the centre of a rounded slab.

Log Text: Cairnholy 12 Carved Panel is one of 6 panels of rock art carvings on a rocky knoll on the W margin of a large field c. 0.5 mile N of Cairnholy Farm. The most obvious feature is a double cup marking on the W end of the panel.

It is c. 130 yards SE of a natural knoll in the centre of the field. There are multiple carved panels of varying quality on this location.
