Log Text: I used to walk past The Penny Well, situated on the leafy Grange Loan, when I lived in Edinburgh. The site of the well has been preserved in red brick built into a stone wall.

Log Text: The rock alcove on the SW slope of Blackford Hill is protected from the elements. It is not surprising that someone sheltering here should pass the time by carving a deer onto a flat rock panel.

Log Text: There are two recumbent stones c. 33 feet S of the standing stone leading to speculation that they were part of a stone circle featuring the sole standing stone. They too small and dissimilar to the standing stone to lend credence to this proposition. They are more likely to be field clearance stones.

Log Text: I have made several visits to Ballochmyle Walls however I have not returned since 2012. I hope that the erosion of the markings has not been significant. Ballochmyle is my favourite Rock Art site due to the scale and variety of markings on the panels. I hope that it has remained relatively obscure because I feel that greater popularity of the site could hasten its demise.

Log Text: Barnhouse Settlement is the closest habitation to the Stones of Stenness marking it as an important site. The site is easy to visit from Stenness. It presents reconstructed floorplans of multiple buildings in the settlement making it easier to imagine how the original may have looked.

Log Text: Barnhouse Stone is surrounded by the Stones of Stenness, the Watch Stone and Maeshowe. This is tough company to compete with. It also implies it could be important to be erected in such an important area. The c. 10 feet tall stone slab stand in splendid isolation in an arable field c. 0.5 mile SE of the Stones of Stenness. It deserves to be visited.

Log Text: In most cases Antiquarians have to mentally reconstruct sites from several stones or grassy mounds. Gurness settlement is at the opposite end of the spectrum. There are multiple layers of occupancy preserved in an extensive network of stone walls representing exterior and interior features.

Log Text: Canmore ID 60935 relates the sadly familiar tale of a megalithic site destroyed by modern farming. Only 2 of the original stones remain in the garden of a bungalow called Druidslea, probably named after the stones. The standing stone in the front garden is allegedly in its original position but the second standing stone was moved to the back garden in 1991. Garleffin stones are like caged tigers in a zoo: they shouldn't be subjected to such indignity.

Log Text: Music Water Standing Stone can be seen from the road for St Eval. It is easy to park and visit via a convenient gateway. The tall irregular stone is good value for energy expended.

Four Parishes Rock, I believe the right hand side of this stone is a slightly different colour because it was once in the ground (for a long time), therefore making this a former Standing Stone. The weathering at the other end (left) is also going in the right direction if made when stood up. Ding Dong mine is visible on the right.

Log Text: The Four Parishes Rock is obviously a recumbent standing with two crosses and indecipherable script inscribed on the stone. It is located at a crossroads in an area rich in megalithic remains. Worth a look in passing.

Log Text: Take the turn onto Dan-Y-Coed, a residential dead-end street on the S edge of Pontsticill. There is room to park at the end of the cul-de-sac. Follow a grass track N for c. 200 yards to reach a sheepfold. Walk NW for c. 300 yards to a small stone covered cairn, Bryn Glas III. Walk c. 30 yards N to Bryn Glas IV, then c. 85 yards N to Pontsticill Ring Cairn and its small satellite cairn Bryn Glas V. My route is viewable on Pontsticill Cairns.
The Bryn Glas cairns are difficult to locate in open moorland due to their low stature. GPS navigation would be advantageous.

View through the 'goalposts' of the Pipers, neatly framing Stowe's Hill in the distance (home of the Cheesewring natural rock feature and the neolithic enclosure of Stowe's Pound). These two stones stand to the west of the Hurlers stone circles. The dung in the foreground is from the ponies that graze the moor.

Log Text: These standing stones would be the star attraction if the Hurlers Stone Circles were not several hundred yards away. As it is this pair of stone have a strong gravitas.

Log Text: I followed the footpath from Bowl Rock S to reach this magnificent 10 footer. Beersheba is one of the most impressive standing stones in Cornwall.

Log Text: The Blind Fiddler Standing Stone is a rare exception in Cornish sites: a massive standing stone accessible via a short path with dedicated parking. Perhaps only Men Gurta is taller and more impressive than the Blind Fiddler.
