Log Text: The ruined broch lies on a small island on the edge of Loch an Duna near Bragar. There is a causeway to the island c. 50 yards S of the A858. Some internal structure and outer walls are still discernible.

Log Text: It is possible to visit Cairn Avel, a well preserved large cairn, if you go straight on at the point where Carnavel Farm paddock joins the path up the hill. Cairn Avel lies c. 300 yards E across boggy ground.

Log Text: If you are visiting Port Ellen and Branhunisary you may as well continue for c. 1 mile to the end of this narrow road at Kilbride farm which has a standing stone in an adjacent field.

Boskednan A submitted by AngieLake on 15th Oct 2004. This view of the 'destroyed barrow'/cairn near Carn Galva, shows its alignment with Ding Dong mine on the horizon. Boskednan circle is on slightly lower ground not far from here, and on an alignment between the 'barrow'/cairn and the
mine building. The flat sides of the pointed stones face north/south. (This pic was taken at 4pm in March 2004).
The stones sit on a higher ridge at 227m.

Log Text: Boskednan A Kerbed Cairn is easily visited on the way to Nine Maidens of Boskednan. There are intermittent kerb stones round the cairn up to 4 feet tall. As a starter before the Nine Stones of Boskednan it is very satisfying.

The three-part base is out of all proportion to the cross. The look of stability is deceptive given its three damaging brushed with modern traffic!

Log Text: Brevig includes a handsome standing stone and a nearby broken recumbent stone. It is sited on the slopes above Brevig close to a derelict building. Look out for a cup mark at c. 3ft on the E face of the standing stone.

Log Text: There is a large lay-by at SD 93769 26809 on Eastwood Road from Todmordern. A path starts here leading to the Bridestones after c. 500 yards on a muddy path (stout footwear recommended). The Bridestones are far enough away from the road to give the unusual weathered stones an isolated special ambiance. The Bride Stone herself is the star attraction, the Groom Stone lies broken by her side.

Log Text: Head for Fortingall. Cross the Lyon Bridge c. 0.5 miles W of Fortingall. There is a large passing place c. 300 yards later on the R with room to park up. Walk back c. 100 yards to a gateway. Walk c. 300 yards SSE across the field to see Bridge of Lyon Standing Stones on the edge of an adjacent field. The stones, one standing and one broken and recumbent are within c. 130 yards of the River Lyon.

Log Text: In most cases Antiquarians have to mentally reconstruct sites from several stones or grassy mounds. Gurness settlement is at the opposite end of the spectrum. There are multiple layers of occupancy preserved in an extensive network of stone walls representing exterior and interior features.

Log Text: Take the A75 to Kirkcudbright then follow the Brighouse Bay Caravan Park Sign. Just before you reach the caravan park there is a beach car park at NX 63470 45804. Walk E along the beach for c. 0.33 miles to reach the farm track leading to Rockvale Farm. Head N away from the coast for c. 100 yards to a gate into the field on the L. Brighouse Standing Stone is c. 350 yards SE from this gate.

Bryn Celli Ddu submitted by ericgrindle on 22nd Feb 2015. The Site is clearly signposted and only a short walk from the road. It is considered to be one of the finest passage tombs in Wales, The series of photographs will show the entrance, the main passage and chamber. The access to the main chamber being via a tunnel, the sides of which consist of large vertical slabs topped by substantial stone lintels.

Log Text: There is a balance to be struck in restoring an ancient site. Sites such as Newgrange seem in my eyes to be over-restored losing some of their original character. The restoration of Bryn Celli Ddu on the other hand has been sympathetic allowing it to retain an air of antiquity.

Another inclusion in the regions’ Archaeosights leaflet - this laneside cairn is typical of many in the region. Located at NX52829915 the stone built cairn is enclosed behind a wire fence but has spectacular views over the surrounding mountains.

Log Text: The low lying remains of Lamford Burn Cairn are not overly impressive however it is possible to view the footprint of a substantial cairn. Parking is available on the verge directly beside the cairn. Easy to visit if heading for Brownhill Burn & Water of Deugh Cairns.

Log Text: There is a minor unsigned turn off the A713 halfway between Dalmellington and Carsphairn at NX 51747 99760. It leads past Lamford Farm to a dead end in forestry beside the Water of Deugh. After c. 1 mile you will pass Lamford Burn cairn on the L. After another c. 0.5 miles take the L fork. After c. 1.5 miles there is a newly constructed road signed for Water of Deugh Circular on the L. After c. 0.2 miles there is a large lay-by on the R. Walk up the road c. 120 yards, looking R to see Brownhill Burn Cairn with a Spruce sapling growing in the middle of the cairn c. 50 yards W of the road.

Log Text: Water of Deugh cairn is inside a restricted access construction zone for a wind farm. There was no completion date posted so it may be some time before Water of Deugh is accessible. Having been denied access by Red Tape I decided to approach Water of Deugh from another angle. It is possible to approach Water of Deugh by parking up in a passing place at NS 55614 01036 on the dead-end lane. Water of Deugh Cairn lies c. 250 yards WNW from this point. Unfortunately it is a stiff walk up a tree felled No Man's Land slope to reach the edge of the forest. On reaching the forest edge to look for a suitable forest ride I found multiple fallen trees forming an impenetrable barrier. At this point I took the hint and gave up.

Log Text: Water of Deugh Cairn is off the beaten track hidden in forestry c. 7 miles N of Carsphairn. It was difficult to find, via a boggy forest ride, into a large clearing. The remains of Water of Deugh Cairn are quite impressive with two exposed chambers and extensive stone structures visible. A modern dry stane dyke has been built on the cairn and an unwelcome Spruce tree has rooted close to a chamber.

Dartmoor, shows evidence of recent damage by whatever farmer is running
huge tractors across the fields. S(he) has been driving right through
the rows (perpendicular to them) along several tracks. I saw evidence of
at least 3 stones that had been dislodged and pushed aside by the wheels
of the tractor. I don't know if there is a procedure for reporting such
damage, or even if the farmer is liable for such damage. I have never, in my 12 year...

Log Text: The small stones which largely make up Burford Down Stone Row are not visually impressive but the length of the stone row is extensive. It was interesting to investigate gaps in the row for buried stones.
