Kissing Stones
Date Added: 27th Jun 2026
Site Type: Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature
Country: England (Derbyshire)
Visited: Would like to visit

Kissing Stones submitted by funsize on 3rd Jun 2007. The Kissing Stones, part of the Wain Stones, are a natural sandstone outcrop. They have been weathered by the unrelenting weather up on Bleaklow, the largest mountain plateau in the Peak District National Park. These stones are iconic but I can find little history relating to them. For the best view of the simulacrum, view the stones from the west. If visiting, beware bad weather. Come well prepared!

Log Text: I leave it for the experts to discuss why the superb object is in a prominent position inside an Anglican Minster church.
Suffice it to say that a gasp is allowed on first viewing it!

Hand Stone at NZ 59427 01513 – Whilst the crude hand at the top of this the south face of the stone, indicating to the east can still be made out. The writing below is now more or less illegible. R.H. Hayes in his 1988 book “Old Roads and Pannierways in North East Yorkshire” page 42 tells us that it says “ This is the way to Kirby” meaning Kirbymoorside. This photo was taken August 2018
