Athelney submitted by mattimpey on 15th Sep 2009. In 878 King Alfred (he who burnt the cakes) built a small strong hold on Altheney to defend against a Danish Pagans.
A monument was erected in 1801 to commemorate this.
The Hillfort is a small hill on the Somerset plains.

Battery Point submitted by TheCaptain on 6th Mar 2016. The Seafarers Memorial Stone, at Battery Point, Portishead. The stone monument marks the closest place on the UK coast which large ships pass.
This is the 59,000 ton Car Carrier "Supreme Ace" having just left Portbury Dock, en-route for Antwerp, having just delivered Ford Mondeos from Valencia.

Cadbury Hill submitted by Creative Commons on 20th Jul 2012. This Ancient fort, directly under the flight path from Bristol International Airport, is on top of Cadbury Hill and must have been an easily defendable position.
Whilst wooded all around the top is kept clear by occasional grazing. Owned by Yatton Parish Council it provides open access and excellent walks for the public.

Holy Well (Frome) submitted by KiwiBetsy on 29th Aug 2006. This well sits beneath a Gothic canopy beside the processional steps up to St John the Baptists Church. The gates of the steps, which can be seen in the right of the picture, were locked when we visited. It’s worth climbing up the steps to the right of the processional steps to look at the sculptured stations of the cross.
The well water flows from the mouth of a stone lions head into a basin and from there away in a gutter that runs down the middle of Cheap Street, which you can follow...

Its a cracking little barrow, with the most wonderful passage and chambers inside, and the powers that be have even left a decent sized area around it free of any farming activity. A lovely sunny day, but some of the walk to the barrow was horrendously muddy.
The fields around the barrow had recently been ploughed, a crop of beet of some sort having been the last grown. While walking back after my visit, I found a bit of the lovely golden colou...
