York Roman remains

York Roman remains submitted by jeffrep on 7th Apr 2020. The English city of York has, since Roman times, been defended with walls of one form or another. In 71 A.D., the Romans built a fort occupying about 50 acres on the banks of the River Ouse, and surrounded it with a rectangle of walls. This photo is the Multangular Tower, that was constructed as part of a series of eight similar defensive towers, built from 209 to 211 A.D. It has ten sides and is almost 30 feet tall.

Canongate Mercat Cross

Canongate Mercat Cross submitted by Anne T on 9th Oct 2019. Standing in the NE corner of the courtyard, looking SW to Canongate. The cross looks modern, but then Canmore (and British Listed Buildings) tell us that the octagonal cross shaft is original; the rest are 'modern' replacements.

Girth Cross (Canongate)

Girth Cross (Canongate) submitted by Anne T on 9th Oct 2019. Standing on the pedestrian island at the western side of the roundabout, I had to wait for ages to get a view without traffic whizzing by on either side. The outer wall Scottish Parliament building is on the left hand side of the photograph. This view looks west up Canongate. If I hadn't have known, from our Treasure Trail clues, that this was the site of the cross, I would have passed it by, but it marks the western limit of the Girth of Holyrood, the largest sanctuary in Scotland, and the las...

New York Cleopatra's Needle

New York Cleopatra's Needle submitted by AlexHunger on 27th Apr 2006. The New Yorkers also call this Obelisk Cleopatra's Needle. It was errected at On, otherwise known as Heliopolis a suburb of modern Cairo, around 1600 BCE by Thutmose I. This is the same location the London Obelisk comes from while only one remains in situ. The Romans took it to Alexandria in 12 BCE. The Egyptian government donated it to NYC in 1881 and the move was paid for by the Vanderbilts. It is now in Central Park behind the Metropolitan Museum. Three Shires Stone

Three Shires Stone submitted by Thorgrim on 22nd Aug 2003. The Three Shires Stones mark the place where Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire meet. They are near Marshfield and Colerne on the Fosse Way at ST796700. It is claimed that these boundary stones were erected in 1859 and are believed to be the remains of a chambered tomb. In early 19th century guide books they are referred to as "Druidical stones" which of course they are not. A modern folly, but perhaps Tolkien had them in mind when he Created the Theee Farthings Stone in the ...
