Wookey Hole Caves Museum

Wookey Hole Caves Museum submitted by JimChampion on 26th Aug 2008. I encountered this palaeolithic hunter-gatherer in the "Dinosaur Valley" at Wookey Hole. Hopefully it doesn't reinforce the idea that 'cavemen' co-existed with dinosaurs. His beard is looking a little green.

Wookey Hole Caves

Wookey Hole Caves submitted by JimChampion on 26th Aug 2008. Fairly standard picture from one of the first caverns (The so-called Witch's Kitchen) at Wookey Hole caves. The water is the River Axe, which soon after this point emerges into the open. Bear in mind that the water level in the caves was raised by the construction of Wookey Hole mill in the 17th century (and even further back with the mill recorded in the Domesday Book). The caves were used by palaeolithic humans and again by people in the Iron Age. In the past hundred years they have been devel...

Long Mynd C

Long Mynd C submitted by TimPrevett on 31st Dec 2004. A depleted bowl barrow, north east from the Shooting Box disc barrow, with signs of excavation in the centre. It has a very slight profile and is best detected as a raised mound on the skyline when approaching from the south east, having turned north before the Boiling Well.

Shooting Box Disc Barrow

Shooting Box Disc Barrow submitted by TimPrevett on 25th Apr 2004. The best, most obvious barrow remaining on The Long Mynd, and the sole known example of a disc barrow in Shropshire. It covers a circular area some 170 feet in diameter, with an outer raised heather-covered ring circa 15 feet wide, and the inner green mound 60 feet across and up to 8 feet high. It is so named due a grouse shooting box that was on its northern side until 1992; it now leaves a large depression in the green mound, with a similar depression on the east side, suggesting another...

The Stiperstones

The Stiperstones submitted by TimPrevett on 28th Jun 2004. A cairn just north east of Manstone Rock. "The Stiperstones" is the name for a hill on the far west reaches of Shropshire, well into The Welsh Marches, overlooking the Welsh border. It is the second highest hill in Shropshire, affording superb views in all directions, and having several bronze age cairns along its ridge. The cairns themselves, excepting the largest, can be quite hard to locate. At a very reductionist level, they are basically piles of stone amidst a whole ridge of piles of...
