Jelling Rundhøj 1 submitted by DrewParsons on 11th Oct 2009. Site in South Jutland (Sønderjylland): One of the twin burial mounds at Jelling, the church set between the two. For the life of me I cannot now work out which of the two this is!! On some websites both mounds have flag poles but on others only one does. The northern mound is 8 metres high and contained a grave chamber made of oak dated to 958-9 AD and is thought to be the original grave of King Gorm the Old.

Unfortunately we had forgotten to bring a torch, so it was kinda spooky to crawl inside passing myriads of insects.
The drywalling is in a fantastic state. There was no restauration made on this tomb. It was discovered in 1880 and only the mound has been put into a better shape since then.
A pretty wet place as well...

Photographed from the road side some 80 metres away as the parking on this narrow and somewhat busy road was difficult. A nice little dolmen. According to the Mon Island pamphlet on prehistoric sites on the island it originally had a barrow with two stones circles around it although today only the uprights and the giant capstone are left standing
