The site is reached via an easy walk of around half a kilometre through fields. The existence of an initial passage in this mound was first discovered in 1895 and excavations were initially undertaken by Georg Sarauw for the National Museum of Denmark. Sarauw wrote that although the passage was not very large, the mound itself was probably the biggest he had seen. The excavations showed that the tomb had not been entered by humans since neolithic times (although the brochure available at the honest box contradicts this), although animal incursions had disturbed the bones and the floor of the chamber was accordingly rather a mess, there being a 15cm to 20 cm layer of bones and artifacts on the floor of the chamber.
The brochure mentioned above states that the skeletons were so well preserved that it was possible to identify 50 individuals of whom 18 were children aged between 6 months and 16 years.
Sarauw was surprised that the chamber was not central to the mound and a year later in 1896 a local farmer discovered the second passage and associated chamber. This was excavated by Captain A P Madsen who found that the chamber had a paved floor with several skeletons, two stretched out in the middle of the chamber while the other bones lay at the chamber wall. Potsherds, flint and a piece of amber were also found at that time. In 1999 the National Museum undertook a restoration programme for Snibhøj
In Julian Cope's "The Megalithic European" this site is incorrectly shown as Spanskhøj. Spanskhøj is loacted a kilometre away across the fields and the subject of a separate page on The Megalithic Portal. There is a third site just 50 metres from Snibhøj called Østergård Jættestue mentioned on the site sign and easily seen from Snibhøj, the subject of a separate page on The Megalithic Portal.
