Carrowmore 51 (Listoghil)

Carrowmore 51 (Listoghil) submitted by DrewParsons on 4th Jul 2010. This massive tomb dominates the megalithic landscape at Carrowmore. There is a suggestion that the site may have held an earlier tomb as three large gneiss boulders were found below the intact cairn during excavations.

Carrowmore 4. submitted by DrewParsons on 5th Jul 2010. Carrowmore 4 comprises a cist C14 dated to 4650 - 4500 cal BC although another dating gives a younger date of 3150 - 2950 cal BC. If the earlier date is used at around 6500 years old it is the oldest site so far determined at Carrowmore. Its 28 stones form an oval of approx 12 metres diameter.

Newgrange

Newgrange submitted by DrewParsons on 6th Jul 2010. The reconstructed quartz facade is certainly an eye catcher although there is serious debate as to whether the original site looked like this. It is interesting that quartz played such an important symbolic roll at prehistoric sites across Europe through to early Celtic Christian sites where quartz pebbles would be left as offerings. Photographed in October 2002.
