Alexander Keiller Museum

Alexander Keiller Museum submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2008. The door to the Barn Gallery at Avebury. The barn is kept very cool in order to preserve the structure of the 17th century building, so it only houses a few archaeological exhibits - according to the NT leaflet it 'tells the story of the landscape through a fully interactive display'. Most of the archaeology collection is in the nearby Stables Gallery. Both are covered by the same admission ticket, unless you are a member of the National Trust (in which case both galleries are free).

The Polisher (Fyfield Down)

The Polisher (Fyfield Down) submitted by Thorgrim on 3rd Aug 2004. SU128715 The Polisher is a sarsen stone on Fyfield Down and is in close proximity to a settlement of the "Beaker Folk". Used to polish stone axes, it is not easy to find and has become something of a Holy Grail to Megaraks. This photograph gives significant clues to its location - the triangular stone and the lone tree are pointers. There is another pointer nearby which makes finding the Polisher a certainty, but I am not going to divulge that. I searched on three separate occasions and o...

Figsbury Rings

Figsbury Rings submitted by JimChampion on 23rd Jan 2005. January 2005. Looking at the NE section of the ramparts from within the rings. The highest portion of the rampart is visible behind the ash trees growing in the inner ditch. These are the only significant trees within the rings, which are now grazed to conserve the chalk grassland habitat. The red flag is a warning that the neighbouring MOD range is in use. From the ring you get an amazing view of the MOD's impact on the modern landscape north-east of Salisbury.
